In minting the 1944 and 1945 V nickels, and again for the regular 5 cent coins of 1951 thru 1954, the RCM used chromium plating on the steel core.

Was chromium plating considered again for the new steel coins? Or has it become too expensive. This time nickel was selected for the plating, and I wonder why nickel rather than chromium, as was done on the earlier coins.

Welcome fjrosetti!
Quick answer is I don't know if chrome plating was considered, but I doubt cost was an issue. Chrome is significantly less expensive than nickel by wieght.

Thank you SFDukie!

Perhaps it was the nickel industry protecting itself, or possible that chrome is just not available in the supply that the RCM requires.

Just wonder if it was considered this time since it WAS used previously and with success I believe.

That wouldn't be the first time that happend. However I wonder if the striking qualities had anything to do with it or maybe the vending industry would have a problem with chrome.

Also remember during WWII there was a copper and nickel shortage which caused a change in the alloy of Canada, United States and even Germany..!
