While searching for the answer to the question as to why nickel rather than chrome plating on CDN coins, I came across this. How big an impact will this have on collectors?

I wonder if other mints will like this idea and start to do the same.
Nickel is not an expensive metal. I wonder how much money they actually save in production per coin?
Of course there are millions of these coins, but when I think of the costs involved in gathering, transporting, melting and then producing new coins....will all the effort be worth it?

Forget collecting any of the older metal composition coins years from now in any condition except in the highest grades that were stashed away.

Future collectors (especially new collectors building sets from circulation) will now miss out on that most satisfying part of the hobby.

An interesting situation may develop regarding the last of the old Canadian nickel composition coinage.

As the RCM diligently removes the old nickel composition coinage, eventually there may be more of these coins circulating in the U.S then in Canada itself.

In the U.S., many 'stray' Canadian coins have, do, and will continue to circulate.

There is currently no removal policy for Canadian coins in the U.S.

Therefore, in the future, the U.S. may be the best, perhaps the only place to search for older Canadian nickel composition coins.
Rest in Peace

I can't see any real bad effects by the change. It may even give the new, young, collectors a new place to start their collections. A collection that could be gotton from circulation. The older collectors will go about doing what they always done..collect.
