Hi, not usually a collector of Australian coins, but I found this one recently and paid a little over silver value for it ($22). Pretty much bought it for the silver then looked it up at home and saw this was a better date. I was wondering if I could get some idea on the grade and realistic value of this coin...

Well in my oppinion it is VF and has a catalog price of approximately $200 (based of 2011 mcdonalds guide and a bit of an increase) and if you were selling it you should be able to get more than $100. Good coin nevertheless

I would check its dimensions to make sure it's real (there's nothing that screams fake to me but for the price you got it it's worth checking).

It is genuine & an absolute bargain at $22, few heavy contacts but still worth between $100 to $140 on a good day.
Great find jdmern. & about VF would be right for the grade.

I have to say, I've been checking out some Australia and New Zealand coins since I've picked this up, there are some really nice coins you guys have down there, I might be starting a few new collections, especially the old silver... Here in the U.S., there are quite a few of the old silver coins I can pick up for a bit over bullion, especially in antique shops...

Regardless of condition the '38 is a wonderful coin and if it spurs you on to an interest in early Aussie silver even better.!! Enjoy.!!

If you doubt it's authenticity, compare ring tone it against a '37.
