I would take a stab at VG. I struggle grading the Type I design. While the stars are flat and the border around the trime is worn, I think the shield keeps it from dropping to G.

VG10 looks about right.

Thanks. I was way off on this one. The trimes give me a headache to grade. I had this at VF35 or EF40. I was looking at the scroll around the shield. The rims and the edges of the C on the reverse.

Notoriously difficult coins to grade properly. They are often found weakly struck, also bent coins are a real issue in the series. This example I believe may get a F12 grade, it's the black spots that keep it back more than the wear for me, I think you could find a prettier example for a type set with a little searching.

I must need to re-calibrate my 3CS grade ability too. I had this at around VF-30, with a partially weak strike on the obverse.

Me too sometimes, I just picked up a raw one I'll shoot this weekend and post up for a grading consensus, as I too don't feel entirely comfortable grading this series, though I do okay on the nickle three centers.
