If your exact coin is not listed, but is pretty close to one that is, how do you record the reference?
I have a Licinius I which has X/III in right field and SMNA in ex.
The closes match is:
Licinius I AE3 "Jupiter" RARE NICE Licinius AD 308-324 Follis "Jupiter, protect and save us." Obv: IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS P F AVG - Radiate bust right, draped and cuirassed. Rev: IOVI CONS-ERVATORI - Jupiter standing left, holding Victory on a globe and scepter, at feet, left, an eagle with wreath in beak, at right, a captive. Exe: SMN (delta) / "x" over | II (gamma) Nicomedia mint: AD 321-324 = RIC VII, 44 (delta = r1) Rare, page 607 - British Museum./ 3.52 g.
Mine is 3.95g. Is my SMNA = SMN Delta? Is it rare?
More importantly, would you record the reference with a note as to how your coin differs?

Mine definitely an A in mint mark. Looked it up in RIC. R1 (or it was when the book was published).

A and (delta) often look exactly the darn same. Id assume its a delta in this instance. Otherwise, id either write out the ID in full with the correct info subbed in, or Id give the RIC Ref with an asterisk and put the difference into a notes column (Id use this for grade if necessary, for if its holed, overstruck etc).
Im working out how I'm going to catalogue now that I'm moving coins into an album and I recokn I'm going to do it manually - find an old accounts book (they have good spaces for things like years, RIC REF etc.

Ben is correct A and Delta do look alike and can be difficult to tell between the two depending on the coins condition. You may want to check Not In RIC before you catalog your coin. Here is the web site: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric

Checked under the scope, definitely A. That is a useful site, I will save the link, thanks.
Ben I just got a plastic older from Asda that has 13 pockets for about a quid. Going to transfer the sleeves from the ring binder, it might stop the coins falling out when I am not being careful!

Its not unusual to see the following in instances like this:
RIC VII, Nicomedia 44 (Var)
'(Var)' standing for an unpublished or omitted variant.
Sadly these types of rarities while interesting don't really add any value for 99.99% of collectors. The 'Not in RIC' site is full of N/M, A/Delta, types of uploads.

I hear you Bobby, the actual value is not of much interest to me, but if I find a coin that is "scarce" or "rare" I get a bit of a thrill!

I would write 'similar to', (or on my 2x2's, 'sim'), and give the nearest catalogue reference number. Recording the differences to the reference most certainly WOULD help, especially if you get more information on your coin, perhaps years later. With some of your coins, you never close the book, when it comes to a more complete attribution. Writing down as much as you can at the time of your original investigation can sometimes be of great gelp.
Even leading museums 100 years ago, mis attributed coins, that with later knowledge, prove the original attribution to be incorrect.
