15MM from amongst the dirties. Silver or silvered.

Writing doesn't look roman, not sure the head does either. Any clues? Nothing on reverse as yet.

I can see DN *R - its a roman coin of Arcadius. You can just about make out the A in the picture. Reverse is probably bleedin' SALVS. I doubt it was ever silvered, though - if there's any silvering, thats a darn good thing.

Well there's a turn up. It looks like a cartoon character at the moment. There does look to be some silvering, but I am using a halogen light and it can be a bit deceiving. Back in the soak with it and see if I can get it a bit cleaner. Thanks Ben.

After considering your neat read text, I must agree with the spacing I don't think it could fit but DN ARC..

You are right the H would be part of the shoulder if this was the case, and would be right.

Well played Ben.

When I started out a couple of months ago, I had never actually held a roman coin. I got a few groups of dirties, and they went through the soaking process. Eventually I put a load in a pot to go to the Bay and they stayed there a couple of weeks. Then going through them again recently, I found the Helena, Aurelian and Arcadius. I didn't know what they were, and I needed your help, but it just goes to show that newbies need a bit of patience, don't be too quick to get rid of your "rubbish" because there could be little gems lurking in the pot.

OK these coins are never going to let me retire, but the thrill of taking a cull and finding detail that allows you to identify it (even with your help) makes everything worthwhile. Never had so much fun with my clothes on!
