A number of years ago, I wanted to get a set of MS65 or higher coins for a special year for me. This was first purchase on the Internet that I have really regretted making.

This coin sits on my desk to remind me time and again that "caveat emptor" - "Let the buyer beware"

The auction text sounded great, the coin was graded, the picture of the coin that was provided looked really good.... what could go wrong...

Well you tell me what you think this coin should be graded at....

Yes those are ugly spots all over the reverse. Also comes with a big blob just over the second A in Canada

Wonder which drivway this one got dragged along. The picture does not do the damage justice, it is worse in person.

And finally the graded portion of the coin. First and last time from buying from this seller.

LOL! You should have seen me when I opened the package...

The seller also state he would give me a "negative" if I complained about him. Luckly he was kicked off of the bay for shady dealings...

Who is that even graded by? It looks like a no name slab to me but I don't really do slab coins so I'm not sure.

Classic case of "buy the coin not the case". We've all been there.

I guess it's just one of those things that you chalk up to experience. One takes a chance buying based on internet pictures. It sure isn't the same as holding it in your hand and tilting it in the light.

I don't have any slabbed coins (anything worth slabbing is usually beyond my budget), but if the grading isn't from NCG, PCGS, ANACS, ICCS, or CCCS, then, in my eyes, it's equivalent to "ungraded". My apologies if I omitted any valid TPG's.

I hope that you didn't spend a lot on the coin. Since acquiring that one, have you gotten a nicer '58 penny?

Getting back to your original question of grade: ...
Well, I don't have the expertise to grade this. But it just doesn't look very nice.

I don't think I'd want it on my desk, be it a reminder or not.

Cheers,
Jerry

Looks like someone counterfeited a PCI Slab.

Is there anything printed on the reverse side of the slab?

PCI is a joke. In the same class as ACG. I wouldn't buy any coin based on their opinion alone.

PCI was not a bad grading service 15 years ago when one wanted to have lower valued coins certified, and not pay the high fees NGC & PCGS charged...

If you walked the Bourse Floor 10 to 15 years ago, you would have found many PCI slabs in the Dealers Cases...

I have crossed over a number of PCI certified error coins (in their holders) to ANACS and every PCI graded coin (with the exception of 1) graded the same grade. The one exception was a PCI MS65-RED 1998 Double Struck LMC on a Type 2 Hub ( Wide AM) was returned in a ANACS holder MS64-RED due to a fingerprint. When asked about the 1 point drop on this coin, I was advised by ANACS that no coin can grade above 64 with a visable fingerprint...

The last time I mentioned this in a CCF thread, numerous members disagreed, claiming a fingerprint doesn't prevent a coin grading above 64. And while I am in agreement in their replies, I only shared information ANACS provided me at that time.

Chances are that I am the only person that had crossed over a NGC MS65 Quarter into a PCI Holder [signature series slab] due to NGC's refusal to list the Die Variety on their holder (CCF thread posted last year). Without the listed Die Variety it would have been a $35.00 Coin, with the Variety Listed, CherryPickers values this at $500.00 in MS65 (plus my coin graded higher then the CPG Plate Photo of this variety).

One has to remember that this was purchsed at least 10-12 years ago, before the counterfitting of slabbed material was really prelevant. One seems to assume that this is a recent purchase. Perhaps at one time the PCI had the intent of being a contender in the market. alas with incorrect grading like this, it shows why they have become what they are today.
