Hello, I have been looking for some time and not in a rush to buy a 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. Just this week my coin dealer I see often happen to have one in his shop. It is a PCGS Slabbed Genuine XF-Details code (92 Cleaned). It is a beautiful looking coin with nice detail. I was told the cleaning was a long time ago but never the less cleaned. His selling price for the coin is $4,700 but he told me to make him a fair offer since I go there often. so I am asking your input on how do I even start to make a offer on this coin and would it be worth it to have and can I sell it later at the same value? I would be Happy if I bought it but not sure on the price. Thank you in advance for your opinion's.

$4700 is problem-free money for a VF30 piece. Unless the coin could grade problem-free on a given day, that asking price is high. Without seeing the coin and only going by what you've said, I would guess $3500 would be fair retail. Again, it's only a guess

Hey, the pictures you posted tell the coin is a special keepsake. However, you do need to bargain so much so to bring it down to at least $4,000, if not $3,500. Rest, all is your luck for how much you can get it. But it's kind of a deal one rarely gets.

Here's one that was sold by Heritage for $3,800:

IMHO, not as pleasing as the one posted here. Check out the Heritage archives for others.

Priced to high in my opinion. I'm looking for the right one myself at the moment.

A good list to compare "asking" prices from different dealers on this coin

Check out the one second from the bottem for 3900, much better deal and no details grade.

That $3900 coin appears to have numerous scratches. Also, I suspect that it's been retoned to perhaps mask an abrasive cleaning. Personally, I much prefer the subject coin.

Check out the 11th coin down on page 2 of the link I posted, thats the one I meant to show the original poster and say I liked better, its 3950 asking price.

Either way, those links give him something to look at besides ebay, to get an idea of asking prices.

Yes, halfhunter, attractive specimen, that. I'm wondering if it may have been repaired though?

Regardless, as you say, the Heritage site offers an excellent place for quality comparison and potential purchase.

That's a nice looking piece. If the problem code is 92 for cleaning then PCGS thought that was the primary problem. I'll be honest, that coin looks very, very good in the images and easily worth $3500. It does appear to be one that could grade problem-free on a given day and as such might even be a $4000 coin. Good luck!
