Don't ever buy from the Paul Sims catalouge. I bougth 5 rolls of pre 1905 Morgan dollars two years ago. They were advertised as (bu). I just recently found out from two coin dealers that they were all cleaned. I know it is too late to get my money back but hopefully I can warn some buyers and hurt the cheating company a little bit.

Ouch. That sucks. Welcome to the forum, hopefully you didn't join just to trash them and will actually stick around a while.

By the way, if you take him to small claims court, and have the original advertisement as well as your bill/invoice/recepit, you might have a shot at getting your money back.

Yeah, he's been selling "commercial" Uncs for years. This isn't a new story and I have to say I feel sorry for you. Buyer beware!

His shop is not too far from where I am. He only sells online, I once went in there to sell some gold for a friend and check to see what he has. I asked to see any Standing Liberty quarters he had for sale, they handed me a catalogue and said order from there. Welcome to the forum, hope you stick around, its a nice place.

Welcome aboard, coindope! Hopefully, you'll stick around the CCF and eventually change your "handle" to something akin to coinguru. Sounds like you learned a bitter lesson, as many of us have at some time or another. There are certainly cheaper ways to learn about buying coins, and the CCF is free! Since you're now here, I'd guess that the one, costly mistake didn't discourage your collecting interests. Maybe, there's a scarce VAM variety among those dollars you bought? There's no downside in checking out that possibility, and it might prove to be a valuable learning experience; if not with this lot, with some future purchase, perhaps? Think positive, and enjoy the quest for learning ... That's this oldtimer's take.

I had the same problem with them on some "BU" $5 Liberties. They were priced at AU level so I kept them. I now only buy slabbed coins from this dealer.

Questions for the OP: Why did you wait 2 years to obtain a 3rd party opinion on your purchase? What feature of the coins that lent the 3rd party opinion of cleaning was so difficult for you to recognize on your own ability at the time of purchase?

I have had the same dealing with this person years ago. I tried him because of his great prices and guess what, you get what you pay for. Returned item for a refund and have never given him a nod since, I pass over his adds in Coin World, it only takes once for me...
