Last night I finally had a chance to look closely at some of the cent coins I inherited. There's about 3 dozen IHC coins in 2x2s from 82 to 08. I was so disappointed in the condition of all the coins, real low balls. Not a one still has any "Liberty" showing and some are down right ugly being hard to discern what they are, although all still have the date readable. Any suggestions on what I should do with these? I have no desire for coins in such condition as I'm writing to keep my collection to AU or better. Sell them all together on ebay? Would there be a market for such low grade coins? Just stash them away for another day? Rick *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Sorry. I assume that whomever gave them to you thought that old meant valuable. You could save them for some kid that's starting out, put them all in a IHC folder, and surprise some young'uns. Or you could sell them on e-bay but probably not worth the expense if the majority of coins are culls. Very disappointing, but you should be lauded for your discerning eye in collecting on AU and better coins. PS: Rick, my very first collection was IHCs collected for a merit badge when I was 11. The set included a '70, '75, and a complete run from 1879-1909 including a VF 1908-S a dealer sold me as a plain '08. The majority of coins are AG-G and I wouldn't trade them for a '13 Liberty nickel. It is one of the "highlights" of my collection, while I have a much better IHC set, this early lowball set reminds me of how much fun collecting once was.

Are you interested in collecting a date/mint mark set of IHC? If so, I would probably use these as hole fillers until you find the coin of your desired grade. If you have no interest in an IHC collection I would probably just sell them off. Just make sure you check for key dates first.

I's start from scratch. I once inherited some real dogs, & wish I had held on to them. The spirit in which they were given, well, you wont see it again.

These coins came from a small time dealer, my wife's last husband so I doubt there's any treasures in the mix ands there's certainly no attatchment to them by either of us. Until I dug them out of the safe earlier this year I had no interest in coins at all though I did have a modest collection of stuff I'd acquired over the years, wheats, steels, some silver and a couple of Morgans. I first invested in several hundred ounces of junk back in January, for the same reason most people stack junk. As I went along I became more and more interested in collectable coins, but only those in AU or better. So mostly what I'm collecting now is modern silver proofs and AU and up older coins, which are quite pricey as you know. I would like to have an IHC collection but not in this poor of a condition. I guess I'll just see what ebay will bring for the whole lot, not like I'm out any money if they flop. Next is several hundred LWCs to go through. I know there's some BUs in that mix but I imagine any older ones are likely to be in poor condition also. Thanks for the advice. Rick

Yes Ray, he passed on before I met her and she has zero interest in them. I also found a tube marked "assorted Indian heads" I haven't cracked it open yet, but I'm sure those are probably in poor condition too.
They don't take up that much space so I guess I'll just hang on to them. As I plod along in this new hobby I'm sure I'll eventually run into somebody that would want them, maybe a kid that's just starting out.

Your looking at approximately .75-$1 each..commons. 08-S would be the best there if it happens to be one.

with Bizybackson, just put them in a folder for some kid someday. I have received all of my IHC as freebies from other coin purchases and some are real dogs. So I just put them in the 2x2's until I have a half folders worth, unless space is a problem. For now I'd let the sleeping dogs lie at least for a little bit.

If they are only worth a dollar at best and you got 36 of them no need to really auction them off as your not really going to make anything off them. I'd buy a cheap folder and give them to a kid, for a kid those coins would be amazing.

"that kid" could be me. I'd gladly take them off your hands. I am 15 and like most 15 yearolds don't have a big budget. I collect anything I can get my hands on. (the most I've paid for a coin is $30). I just got a folder for IHC and am looking for any condition just to fill as many holes as possible. Let me know. Thanks.

I agree with everyone else. A kid might want them, or you could try ebay if you have a lot of them. I am just starting out and bought a bunch of low grade IHC's at the World's Fair of Money last week, so someone would want them.

If you have a $1.48 worth of pennies that is one pound of copper, hoard them! :)

Have a few coins I would gladly send you. I cannot PM yet (not enough posts) but if you can find a way to send me your name and address I would be happy to send a few older circulated Lincoln cents and some other cool coins.
