I took a 9 month hiatus from collecting as I was doing a half ironman in May and all my extra money for quite sometime went to getting a new triathlon bike and gear. So I decided I really want to finish my Dansco type set, its one set I have always wanted to complete but have never done so despite starting it three times and having to sell off portions or all of it because of financial issues. So I hit the coin shop and am looking around and I hear someone asking about silver rounds and holy crikey did silver take a plummet since November. I could not pass up the chance to grab a Canadian Maple Leaf and a Chinese Panda at those prices instead of another type coin (I always like both these coins and like having at least one of each in my collection). So go back in a third time and nearly get derailed by a Boy Scout commemorative dollar for $39 but held firm and got a 1832 Capped Bust Dime instead for my type set. I am a little frustrated by the commemoratives I remember a pawn shop selling them for $30 but then silver took a spike and they raised them to $35-40. So I go back in the pawn shop and they are still selling them but for even more like $40-45 and I asked them why and he was like because of collector value wanted to call him out on his BS. When he was selling them before it was for silver value but now that silver value has taken a plummet we will claim collector value such BS. I still really want that Boy Scout commemorative though but I think I should get the Flying Eagle cent I saw instead. Heck I almost bought a used Franklin half album and one or two Franklins. I am too ADHD but I really really want to finish this set some day. I have 49 of the 76 and the flying eagle would take me to 50 coins in the set, sure I got a lot of pricier coins left like the two Seated Liberty dollars and some of the earlier Half Cents and even large cents and some capped bust coinage but I also still have a lot of easy ones to get like some Seated Liberty dimes and a 1859 indian. How do you keep your ADHD from constantly derailing you.

I don't.
I enjoy all the interesting coins I haven't seen before (and might never see again) and if I see something really nice and I have the money in my budget, I buy it if it's a reasonable price.
Mind you, I gave up trying to build a type set many years ago, and that was after wanting a date set.

I just jump around from set to set constantly. Nothing is complete, but on the bright side I can work on whatever has the best prices at the moment

Yea but that is where the OCD side gets in the way I really like to complete sets. Funny thing is I like the to complete sets that sometimes I will buy lesser coins and then just upgrade them later so I can complete the set. With the type set I have been trying to buy the nicest coin I can afford, I know it doesn't give the set some uniformity as I have and MS63 Morgan on the same page as my VF Trade dollar but I like the sets complete. But even then I have still found myself buying fillers at times like I have just an XF type II Buffalo nickel and that is a coin that is not expensive in MS grade so why did I buy the filler. I have several coins like that in the set. One of the nice things is I started a 20th century type set for my little boy so when I buy an upgrade the older one just goes into his album (I was looking at his set and noticed man I need to work on that set a little more too so I bought him a silver Roosevelt, a silver War Nickel and Kennedy silver clad for his set as I won't upgrade those in my set as I went MS on all those in my set. I have held off getting any Barber coins for his set as I bought less expensive ones for mine with the intention of upgrading them and giving him the less coins. We also have another boy on the way in October so I guess I need to start another set soon too. The Franklin half set was one of the few sets I've ever completed before my ADHD got the better of me as it was the first numismatic coin I ever bought before that I was just buying silver rounds for like $5.

If I ever get this one finished I might do a second one of heavily circulated ones to have a cheap uniform set.

Oh yea if I ever did a Franklin set again it would be MS61 or higher in each coin for uniformity and that is one set you can easily do 61 or higher in each coin, I like how they are all silver too. I was buying them for the silver at first because I had been doing silver rounds and got into coins. The type set has always been my favorite set though its one of those sets that are so easy to get into (I mean the modern coins feel up fast) but then so hard to complete (the first time I was doing it I had the gold page too not going that route this time haha). My problem is I got several sets that would be easy to catch up if I would stop getting distracted (I started a Sacagawea set because I loved the 2012 reverse and then only did half the set or my Presidential dollar set that I am now missing p and d from the last 2 last year and the D's from this years 3).

That's fine nowadays with ebay and online dealers, and even better if you have dealers and coin shows nearby. Soon after I began, I was living on the outskirts of the universe, and it was pre-Internet, so I learned to take any coin even if a choice wouldn't cost much more, if there was no choice coin to be had.

Very true so much easier to find coins nowdays with the internet. I have bought a number on ebay over the years to me there is something about seeing it in hand before buying it so I normally try and buy from my local shop first.

No harm in that 1962penny, I have a very poor 1818 large cent in my type set right now because I wanted a filler and got it for $2 I love to collect.

My ADHD totally paid dividends of the 3 coins I was looking at last Friday I made off with the best value of the three. I noticed afterwords I could easily pick up the boy scout commemorative dollar for about $10 less on ebay and then I went back in today to see about that Flying Eagle cent and ended up finding a nicer flying eagle that I liked more. I have actually passed on that other flying eagle several times it was a 1858 Large Letters in a fine grade for $40 but had some good nicks on back that had always put me off from getting it. I think they had the other flying eagle severely underpriced its a 1858 small letters but in a VF grade and a much nicer coin than the F graded coin and it was only priced at $36 severe score for me (guide lists it at a $67 coin and the other one as a $41 coin). I also found another score on a coin I need to go back and get a 1883 Shield nickel in XF grade (really nice coin) for $39 again way underpriced as guide has it as a $61 coin (I wonder how often they go through and reprice their coins). I would have gone with that coin over the flying eagle today had I not found the other flying eagle. Nice thing is since I spent less I managed to get a nice 1912 Barber dime that is nicer that mine for as an upgrade and hand mine off to my little boys album I am putting together. It was a 1912 in fine grade for $6 they had a 1916 in VF for $8 but I swear the 1912 looks better and the 1916 showed an old cleaning not very appealing on that coin. I plan on getting an XF or an AU for my set for that coin eventually but I figure with a new baby on the way in October I am going to have to start another set anyways so I can upgrade once more and pass off the 1912. I love when a plan comes together :)

So many sets so little time just browsing in here makes me want to start sets. Like a Walking Liberty set, a dollar year set, Mercury dime set, Franklin half set, Indian Head cent set. I am going to try and stay focused this time finish a set before I move onto the next, started the commemorative dollar and half set and the type set need to work on those first along with the type set. I also just need to take one week and just get my sacagawea and Presidential dollar sets complete wouldn't take me much.

The dealer for whom I worked (a holiday job) never repriced stock except for fluctuations in gold.
He said that if a coin didn't sell, it must have been overpriced and therefore as coins rise in value, eventually it'll be at the right price level and will sell.
He reckoned this saved him lots of time.
He also colour coded prices, a different colour each year, thus he could tell roughly how long something had been in stock and discount accordingly for discerning customers.

Yea I get the feeling they don't reprice very often except on the gold and silver and maybe some of the really nice pieces in the case. No way that VF flying Eagle should have been less than the fine graded one as the other coin is much nicer. And that Shield nickel I saw is a beaut too.
