I know this coin has its problems, but I'm really starting to dig the LHNz and am putting together just a simple collection of them all in lower grades. I like the coins to look worn, used, I like the history attached to that look...so I'm not as concerned about the problems here, but more using it as a potential learning opportunity. To me with out the scratches that make it looked harshly cleaned, I personally would grade this at a net of VF 20. I feel the Obverse grades a little higher (VF 25) and the reverse grades a little lower (XF 15). But what do the hairline scratches do to the grade? That's my biggest question. Would love to hear, not just grade opinions, but any thoughts or comments that help you arrive at your conclusion. Thanks!

Not too good at spotting a cleaned coin, but it looks to have been cleaned at some point IMHO. If it hasn't been cleaned I think it would grade higher, VF 30.
EDIT: Oh and to answer your question about the scratches: IF it hasn't been cleaned (especially using acids/chemicals/extreme brushing) most would over look them because of how nice the 'LIBERTY' is and how detailed the hair is. And the wording is all present. I have many coins with hairline scratches! That's why there's grading in the first place.

The harsh cleaning moves the coin from the VF problem free category to the VF Details category. If you're happy with the coin that's all that matters. I've noticed cleaned and detail coins increasing in price over the past year. It seems that collectors are more willing to live with blemishes for the major price break.

I'd go with VF20 details and cleaning.

So I ended up winning this LHN for 26 bucks. I like the look of the coin in the pic, I'll see when I get it home. For some reason LHNs have caught my attention, so I'm going to do a Dansco 7111 with a circulated set. I've not decided if I'm going to include a racketeer nickel or not. Considering I found this one which sold for $44, graded at VF 25 by NGC, I think I did pretty well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/360663148254?ru=http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html%3F_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=360663148254&_rdc=1 The graded one seems to have some hairline scratches as well, but not near like the one I won. All in all though, baring any negatives I find when I get it in hand, I'm pretty happy. I'd welcome any thought or opinions.

You think that nickel is in bad shape, phankins? I'm actually working on my Liberty nickel set, too. I have about 6 to go and your posted coin puts 90% of my coins to shame (grade-wise)

JimmyCC, LOL...i didn't mean to sound snooty about it. I actually like the coin a lot. I've just learned to temper my excitement until I get it in hand. I actually like these coins to have some wear on them, I love to see the use on them and wonder about where its been in its life.

I like a small amount of wear, but I want to see some good (or in coin talk, fine) details, lol.

Post pics when you get it. Looks nearly XF to me, but I think the scratches would cut its vague in half, some people don't like it. Sometimes these light scratches are not visible when you have the coin in your possession, as the picture is very magnified. The liberty is solid and you can see most of the hair. I think Vf30 is like 3/4 of the hair. The 83 with cent is hard to find in decent condition.

I think also with the third party grading you are paying passed down cost of the slabbing. So not a fair comparison. Also on your link the scratches may be on the slab. I think you did get a good deal. I paid about $60 for one with less details! Mine was stated to be xf but probably if vf. Still interested to see if you can get a good photo. Maybe someone else can offer a more informed opinion. Regarding vf to xf grades on Liberty nickels. And when a coin will get a details grade,
