Yes it has happen to me, you are the winning bid on an ebay auction for a pound of coins. You can't wait to get you mail and see what you won. You open the box and in the handful of coins you see a 1871 Trade dollar. Wow today was a lucky day. You leave the seller a great feedback. You tell yourself you are going to send it in to be graded. Well one day a couple of years later you get around to sending in the coins you always wanted graded, This comes back as 1874-S Not Genuine. That day sucked. A fake. Of course I don't remember who I won the auction from and could not take action. Lesson learned. Get your coins checked out right away. It doesn't help there are no coins shops or experts here in my little town. Tell me your experience, pass it on so someone else can learn from our mistakes.

I'm a coin collecting novice. Who does this and how much does it cost?

JimmyCC, There is always someone out there who wants to rip off somebody. I know there have been coins from china that were fakes. I don't know who made this one or how much it cost to have fakes made.. It sucks to get one.

Back in the day you could get silver for, say, $0.50 an ounce, stamp it into a counterfeit and double your money. It's more than likely real silver, but a copy.

The government had bigger problems than dealing with unauthorized mints.

Oh, and TPGs, Third Party Graders, do coin grading and 'branding' for a fee.

This looks like a PCGS rendering. I believe you can post the long number on the bottom of the paper for the coins non-pedigree. Or just search it.

Ok, but did you do the basics such as checking the coin with a magnet and weighing it? Doing those two things will eliminate >90% of Trade dollar counterfeits.

Wait, you didn't just buy this coin and become depressed that it was a fake. You bought a 'pound' of coins and found this in it. Obviously it would have been a bonus, but it isn't something you were purchasing, so how could you send it back or file a complaint even if you did remember the seller?

Iraqandroll, Depressed no, disappointed it was real, all coins you purchase should be genuine no matter how you purchase them. Biokemist6 yes I did check it with a magnet, but didn't weigh it. I was just excited about getting one in my collection. Put it in my safe and procrastinated. You know what they say about procrastination. Like is stated lesson learned.

So, the coin is silver, just not an original Trade dollar?

Arby96, I actually meant who grades and verifies the coin and how much does that service cost.
