I'm completely new to this, bought my first US coin and just wanted to confirm its ok.

Its not magnetic, weighs 11.5g but appears to be missing a dot between United and Half where the red circle is.

Does this mean its fake?

Any help would be appreciated.

to CCF.Looks real to me.The weak dot is most likely a Grease Filled Die which adds no collector value.

Specialized_J, to the CCF.

To answer your question, no, that doesn't mean it's fake. It may be duee to either wear, or most likely a Grease Filled Die strike.

Thanks for the welcome!

That's good news, I've also got an 1884 Morgan dollar and a 1939 Washington quarter on the way.

! Sounds like you have a good start.

When handling coins, especially silver, you may want to make a habit of holding them by the edges and not on the surfaces of the coins. Oils from the skin on your finger tips can leave finger print marks which will affect the appearance of the coin.

Kind of irrelevant for this one; if you look at the striations on the reverse (most noticeable on the right side) and the crud caught in the tight spots of the devices on the obverse, and the thoroughly rounded features of the eagle, you can see that this coin has been totally wrecked by harsh, abrasive cleaning and mechanical polishing. Looks like someone took a buffing wheel to it.
