The Cleo portraits are ugly and in bronze, wouldn't you rather have a Ptolemy with her female features?

Later issues of the coin I posted has been hypothesized to be Ptolemy I with Cleopatra's female features.

Nothing special (or crazy huge), but here are some of my larger bronzes: Ptolemy VI Philometor and Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (30 mm, 22.28 gr)  Hadrian sestertius (34 mm)  Lucilla sestertius (32-ish mm?)  Jovian AE1 (28 mm, very large for a late Roman bronze)  Justinian I follis (32 mm)  I also recently got a Gordian III sestertius but still need to take my own photos of it, which I will do soon. This was a challenge of sorts I looked for one from each Century 1st Century Claudius AE Sestertius 25.90 grams 36mm Sear 1854 Rome AD42   2nd Century Commodus AE Sestertius 22.68 grams 30-31mm Sear 5822 Rome AD183   3rd Century Maximinus AE Sestertius 21.16 grams 30-31mm Sear 8332 Rome AD236-8 Quite the dashing fellow   Lastly my GIANT Ptolemy AE 9.35000000 grams 19.55555555mm   Looks like Swiss chocolate |

FR-- I was wondering when you were going to treat us to a show. They're all fabulous but I especially love that Ptolemy!

The Ptolemy was just for you. I rather like it though so it won't be going anywhere anytime soon. I think I may have a 'blue' wax around somewhere ......

I'm loving this thread and hope to add more of my own soon. Ski-- more nice coins. Salus reverses are always interesting. Dutch-- I like that portrait. Very attractive reverse too.

Nice Nero! I'm keeping an eye out for just the right one. Not sure what type I like best, and what I like best may be a moot point because of high prices.

The 'victory' Asses are reasonable and plentiful TIF. For 200 clams you might get a VF/EF portrait of a sneering Nero

Yeah, FR-- in the scheme of things that coin is not prohibitively expensive. It's just that there are so many other things I like better. Just seems like I should have a sneering Nero, though. And is it just me or does everyone else look at Sneering Nero and think John Belushi in Animal House?   |
