Machine doubling. It is flat, almost shelf like. True doubled die hub doubling will be the same height as the device that is doubled. Also true doubling adds to the thickness of the device, unlike Machine Doubling that takes away from the device like this one.

1957 seems to have been a very predominant year for this MD. I have seen several posts with the nearly exact problem. heres mine.
