I've had this Kennedy Bicentennial half for quite some time and have never looked into the different types of errors that can occur. I have no idea what the markings under the lettering are from. The actual lettering on the coin is over other markings. I'd just like to know what its from and if it adds much of any value to the coin. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

From here it looks like glue. Many people, especislly non-collectors get tripped up by it, as it can often resemble rare errors.

I'm not sure what you mean by glue. The markings are actually indented or sticken into the coin and it it below the lettering without any damage to the coin lettering itself. I don't know alot about this stuff so if you could explain how glue would do this it would be helpful. I'm not doubting it, I just don't know what you mean. I'm adding a couple picts that might show it a lttle better.

I'm on my phone so I could be misreading the photo on this small screen. Hopefully someone else will stop by soon.

It looks like maybe a damaged planchette before pressing. It appears as though the coin had been stamped after damage occurred. I am by no means a pro at this but that's the way it looks to me. We need to wait for the pros to chime in on this one. Or a pro with bigger than a phone screen

I agree with rpmes, damaged planchette.

The surface has most likely been acid-etched from contact with an object soaked in a corrosive fluid. This will leave the surface slightly recessed. This doesn't really look like a struck-through error, although I can't rule it out from your photos alone.

It looks like a stain to me. I don't think it is pre-strike damage. The field is the highest part of the die and is the area receiving the most pressure during the strike. So a void on the planchet would show more on the letters then on the field.

Wish we could get a close up of the lower left corner of the building and E PLURIBUS UNUM area.

Just so you know... The first photo does look like glue, as ErrorCoins222 wrote. Sometimes people glue coins onto stuff or glue two together. Eventually then come apart and if the glue is clear it can look like all manner of things until you scratch it with your fingernail. You do not have a glue problem with that coin. Can you get better photos?

I still can't tell anymore from those pictures. Here's a suggestion, take the photos from straight above the coin and not at an angle. The angle is causing part of the coin to be out of focus in each picture. Then use one light source starting with it close to the camera and adjust it from there to get the best lighting as you can. There are people here much better than myself with photography of coins so maybe they will add more. There is also a photo section of the forum where you can find tips.
Since you said it is indented and not raised I haven't gone with the glue suggestion. But I'll admit it does really look like glue. Maybe try soaking it for just a little in acetone and see if that makes a difference. It won't hurt the coin but only use a little and make sure you are in a ventilated area.

Unfortunately, I still cannot decipher the photos, even with a bigger screen. It doesn't look like a genuine mint error, a strike through being what this phenomenon most closely resembles.

Thanks for pointing that out Coop. I didn't see Mike's post. That resolves it for me.
