Off the top of my head these appear to be Notgeld Notes. The extremely high denominations
were dictated by the hyper-inflation in Germany during the early 1920s. While of not great value, they are interesting, colorful and collected by people who are interested in the historical period. This link takes you to a short overview:

Both from the Stadt Trier and, as Mattewvincent says, notgeld issued after WWI. In those states not worth a great deal but a fascinating history behind them.

Stadt Trier? I was in Trier in 1974. The Romans reached this area and built an outpost.
Close to the Luxembourg border, it was the closest that I got to a Roman ruin.

Is there a better way to say 'thank you?'
