Hello,

I normally do not work with foreign gold coins but could not pass up the chance to own this one.

Please review this coin and comment on the following:

1) grade
2) reason for the presence of these scratches
3) how these scratches affect the overall value of this coin either positively or adversely
4) authenticity

By the way the coin does exhibit the following characteristics:

a) cartwheel luster
b) total weight of 8.50 grams
c) diameter of 21.96 mm
d) thickness of 1.63 mm

Thanks,
mdpmedia

The following close-up shots exhibit the minute scratches present on the coin.

It is important to note that these scratches close to the outline of the head do not actually appear to continue as a scratch onto any adjacent surfaces of the head, mouth/chin, front hair, or rear hair etc.

2) are those below the coin's surface? they look like they are raised, which would indicate the die had scratches

The most pronounced scratches are the ones below the area of the chin.

To avoid ruining the patina from a sewing needle, for example, a rubbed a porcupine quill instead over these scratches adjacent to the chin.

The flexibility along with just enough rigidity of this quill was sensitive enough to allow me to feel the roughened areas of these scratches under the chin.

I assume, therefore, that this implies, as you suggested, that the dies were over polished at some point during the minting process resulting in the creation of minute incuse ruts in the die which conversely resulted in the raised lines on the obverse surface etc.

So how does this fact affect the value or rarity of this krugerrand?

I don't think this is a question of numismatic value. Krugerrands are bullion pieces and therefore the scratches are not important. You sell it at spot+/-.
