Hi

I am at this coin dealer and he has a coin priced at around $75.

The coin seems to be in fake NCGS slab and what I am worried about is the coin itself maybe fake.

I took some pictures with my phone camera so pictures are not very clear but would like to see what some experts here would like to say.

Also worth mentioning is the D in the dollar seems to have a small bit missing at the lowest end.

Thank you
Nil

Well it's not a fake NGC slab. It's an NCGS slab.

So do you think it should be genuine

Well now why do you think it's a fake NCGS slab? Who would counterfeit a NCGS slab and a $50 coin?

Edit: I'm just wondering why you think the slab looks fake?

Well I have read many reports of counterfeit Morgan dollars. Something seems to be off about the coin. So far all I could find was in the letter D seems to have an error.

Again I am not an expert so maybe I am wrong.

Thanks again

Although I could be wrong, it's my fear from third-world "slabbers" like these is not so much counterfeits as coins with vastly overinflated grades. The "MS65" coin pictured here could well be a cleaned AU coin in the real world; a genuinely MS65 1878 is worth a considerable sum more than the asking price here. That's a hint.

The bit you see missing in the "D" is actually a point in its' favor; this is a known error in some examples of this issue as long as it's a legitimate coin. I won't put it past the counterfeiters to eventually duplicate the known varieties, and since they sometimes take castings from the coins they have to create the fakes, it may not be real. My gut says it is real, but I would not risk $75 on it. There will always be another.

Thank you Super Dave. I examined the coin further and seems like it is cleaned.
I took a pass at this coin. Appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Thanks

BTW super Dave was right on the money. Coin was cleaned. Dealer agreed and dropped the price to 50.What got me thinking is his comments and expert opinion. Just thought I will give credit where it deserves.

Thanks for guiding me.
