There have been a lot of posts lately about fakes being sold on ebay. One of the auctions by this seller was a recent topic and I thought I would delve into it a little further. Can you pick the fake out of the completed auctions by this ebay seller?

My guess would be the 1889-cc Morgan? Don't know enough about the markers of a fake, but the coin just looked a little "off"?

The mint mark on the '89 CC doesn't impress me, but take a look at the commemorative halves.

The Illinois and the Boone had details that looked a little mushy, but the other ones were pretty well circulated and nothing one those jumped out at me... It didn't help that some of the photos were terrible and you had glare blocking whole sections of the photo...

Don't you mean "Can you spot the genuine one among the fakes"? :-)

A cursory glance over his offerings and all of them give me pause. Unless as djmern said, the photos were *really* that bad -- which I can admit is a possibility, I wouldn't bid a dollar on them.

Everything is mushy or has the wrong tone with the wear it exhibits. The 1918 Illinois Commem. Half, for example, has the devices in and around Abraham Lincoln's head looking like they're disappearing into the fields, and the patina looks like an "AliBaba" replica.

I simply wish I had better pictures.

I tried to find a coin that I could say "yeah this one is good" I just haven't come across that one. The commemoratives are all mushy. The 1937 Texas appears in three separate auctions in the exact same form. The Morgans are all grainy with mushy details. Not a one has breast feathers and I can pick out at least one date digit that is really wrong. As you mentioned, all the coins have the same patina that spells cast. I think they're all fakes.
I think you could fill the black cabinet with these so called coins.

I could also not find any that I liked. Careful examination of the lettering and comparison to my known authentic comm. halves shows quite a bit of difference. For example, look at the 'F' in the word 'OF' in 'The United States of America' on the Illinois Lincoln coins. The coins from this seller have a weird fat bottomed F, while all 4 of mine are sharp.....

He states his coins came from an estate. So, did he unknowingly buy a collection of fakes, or does this seller have a longer history of this?
