I can't tell if that's wear above the ear and on the breast feathers or not. Bryan1315 is the resident expert on the 1878 Morgans. Of course, all of the "Morgan experts" on here can certainly help you on the correct grade. That is a pretty big dig on the cheek regardless if the coin does have any wear. If I'm not mistaken, the cheek and the open fields are the key areas for grading these. Just some useless info for you. I'm not very good at grading these but I'll take a shot. If that's not wear, I will say MS63-64. If that is wear I am seeing, of course it would have to drop to a low AU.

BTW, two things:

1. Your pictures look fine, but may need a bit of tweaking on the lighting. I have found the lighting to be the most important factor. Play around with different angles. Regardless, they are pretty darn good for a first time post.

2. The author can edit their previous topic and add/remove things. Just place your cursor over the little icons by your first post and you will see which one it is.

I'm inclined to call it Uncirculated - the mint frost appears essentially undamaged on the cheek, hair and eagle's breast. Given the frost, it's likely that the marks on the cheek are not as prominent, or deep, as they look - much of it could be just frost breaks.

Unfortunately, the gouge above the ear is pretty prominent, in a prime place. My gut feeling is the coin makes MS64.

It is indeed uncirculated, nice call. I'm not sure how the scratches got in there though. I suspect years and years of getting moved around in a stupid 2x2 that is was in. I'm moving all my Morgans to Airtights soon.

Unfortunately, with the scratch, it might not be graded by either PCGS or NGC. It looks to be MS-63 to me, and I would tend to expect to pay around $45 or so for it.

With the prominent scratch, I am afraid the coin will body bag as damaged. As for grade with out the scratch a solid MS 64. If it indeed grades because the scratch is not as deep as the picture indicates, it will grade MS 62. A shame as your Morgan dollar is very beautiful.

Because of the scratch I'll say MS63
