What do you think of this Liberty Head? Seems to have a ton of contact marks, and the surfaces look a little funky. I don't know gold one bit though....

I retract my previous statement after looking this coin over more closely. Some of the stars on the obverse appear to be cleaned and there are a lot more bag marks and wear then I initially saw.

I'd say VF40

This looks like a pocket piece at one time or possibly from jewelry. I don't care the obverse at all. I net it at VF.

Are you sure it hasn't been cleaned? On the obverse, I see six of the stars that have smooth areas around them. The lower two on the left side and the 2ne to 4th on the right side. That looks kind of strange. Very smooth around the edges of the stars while the rest of the coin is roughed up. The reverse looks ok, though.

Hi tights24
Looks like there are more than the average number marks on the obverse. The surfaces on the obverse, especially from 1 to 5 o'clock look a little funky to me as well. It is hard to be sure without the coin in hand, but maybe there was some cleaning. However the strike is very nice on the reverse. I'll say net XF-40.

I also have this date in my collection. Here is a scan for comparison. Now for even more fun, there are two copies for our members to grade!

t360,

Was your coin cleaned? It looks like it, but I am not an expert on this at all. Still trying to learn. Nice coins, both of them.

Makes sense. Perhaps the obverse was exposed and the reverse more protected in a mount. Might be some evidence of mounting on the edges.

Maybe the scan makes it look that way. Sorry I am photographically challenged. I really need to learn how to photograph coins properly and stop using the scanner.

In hand, it doesn't look cleaned to me. The surfaces look very similar to the other dates I have which came in PCGS holders. I bought them all about 5-6 years ago. This one also came in a PCGS holder, so I assumed it didn't look cleaned to them either.
