I was browsing ebay and this coin caught my eye. Seller has 100% feedback. I think it looks okay but just wanted to ask before I bid on it.

I might add that's a really nice example with the tassels on the scepter. That's Phat! I have a really nice one but the tassels rarely make it on the flan. I would be proud to have the much legend to boot. Bid my friend!

Alright, I will bid away! I'll bid a little stronger than I was going too. Ancient coins can be difficult to judge. You don't just have condition, but there is strike quality, eye appeal, etc. (Not complaining though).

Don't go too crazy I would say you should max out around $50. It is a fairly common coin. They are readily available, and they are like never completely struck on flan. Although the King depicted was nameless until an inscription was found in Afghanistan in 1993. Do a google of Soter Megas, I believe Wikipedia sums it up quite nice.

Before bidding on any ancient coin, I have a look at what the market place tells me tell me first, on equivalent coins.

Have a look on VCOINS 'ancient', and search for 'Soter Megas'. After having a good look at what equivalent coins are available here, you should be able to develop in your own mind what level a bid from yourself would be justified.

I ended up wining the coin for about $40. I did a search on vcoins and it seems that ones in similar condition are going in the $30-$60 range. I'll see what it looks like in hand but I think I'll be happy with it. You have to start learning somewhere how to buy ancient coins.

I also don't get inundated with the spot price of silver/gold here in the ancients sub-forum.
