Everyone seems to have glossed over part of the original posting. When I sell stuff through the net I only take postal money orders. By doing this, I go to the post office and cash the check and send the buyers stuff at the same time. There is no waiting period for funds once I have it.

Most of the sellers I've seen who do not accept PAYPAL are fed up with the fees and are willing to lose 80% of prospective bidders by requiring a money order or check for payment. Money Orders/cashiers checks require the bidder to pay the fee and add at least three days to the transaction (more if a personal check). On the other hand if the seller wants the $$ now it's faster than PAYPAL. It took 7 days for PAYPAL to move funds from the account to my bank ... yet it takes them a nanosecond to remove the funds (I know the bank is part of the problem too).  |

I will never use paypal to buy or sell. They are not a FDIC nor a bank and they are owned/sister co. to ebay. www.nopaypal.com |

Exactly! That's why I like the postal money orders. The seller is charged a small amount, it is guaranteed by the federal government, and it can be cashed immediately.
But I forgot to mention something else about them. They have a listing of foreign countries they are good for as well. For instance, I can get a $20 and send it to Canada, or Australia, Britain, and all of them can be cashed at their post office. And they all cost the same price. Try going to a bank and get an international money order and they'll charge a heck-of-a-lot more. Heck, they may even charge you to cash it!

Nice site!  I still accept PayPal mainly because they haven't burned me yet. The first chargeback I get from a scumbag buyer where PayPal takes the buyer's side, then no more PayPal. |

I don't think they've ever claimed otherwise. They are just a convenient payment method & an alternative to getting a merchant account if you want to take CC's I've used them since they were X.com and have never had any issues after 100's of transactions as buyer & seller. The fees are generally more than made up for in increased bidding. I'll very rarely bid on an auction that doesn't take it. Postal MO's are great, but our PO closes at 5pm & that means I have to leave work early or stand in line for an hour on Sat. to get one. I have to really, really want something to go to the trouble. On second thought maybe PayPal should go away. I'm sure I'd spend a lot less.  Edited by AnemicOak

I am on disability for PTSD due to combat, belong to a number of Vietnam Veteran org. and know plenty of Psycho Bikers that keep asking me if I have some "dirty deeds done dirt cheap" that they can do!
Local situations I can handle myself; but since USA is not as small as UK, these contacts are handy to have; though I have never used them and probably never will, but they span the continent.

Its good thing to have contacts tho,not in a violent way as such,but just so you know if anything was wrongly done to you that uv'e got people there to look out for you,wherever you are....and someone who looks mean!
....and ive just realised I hav'nt talked about paypal or coins for a very long time in this topic!Apologies!

Bobby I have always taken PayPal and feel the benefits far outweigh the risks. I have to ask you if a seller follows all the rules and the buyer does a chargeback won't PayPal side with the buyer? A while back a very reputable seller sold a PCGS cent for over $6,500. The buyer paid with PayPal(via AMEX) and thought he could flip it locally for more. He sold it for $3500 and could not pay the credit card bill. The credit card rep suggested if it was an unauthorized purchase they would do a charge back. PayPal then froze the sellers account for $6,500. To make matters worse the buyer contacted the seller saying he wanted to make good and sent a first installment check of $300. Once that partial payment was deposited criminal charges could no longer be brought against the buyer. No payments were to follow. This story was related to me by the seller who is out the coin and the money. |

In the event of a chargeback Paypal will go to bat for you if you follow and qualify for their seller/buyer protection program. However, usually the credit card co. wins regardless...they have more muscle than paypal/ebay. I have been on both sides. I just think it is wrong/illegal for paypal to freeze accounts and deny access to funds for 180 days on whim.

Thanks for the information. On another thread, since locked ["Whart recourse do I have?"], I can now understand why sellers might be reluctant to accept PayPal when the low morals and lack of responsibility of some opportunistic and unscrupulous buyers think it is perfectly OK not to honor a commitment to pay for an item. Nonetheless, I now save my searches on ebay to show only sellers who assume the business risk in taking PayPal as a convenience for the buyers, the vast majority of whom are honest and simply do not want to go get a money order or cashier's check in this modern age of instant electronic funds transfers and wait forever and a day at the mercy of unpredictable mail delivery to complete a sales transaction. The very reason we collect coins and paper money is that they are antiquated and becoming obsolete as a medium of exchange, as the TV commercial for the VISA debit card suggests. Thank you all for the information which has been helpful to me to understand a certain seller who suddenly stopped taking PayPal. |

I accept Paypal on most items I sell with the exception of higher ticket items where the fees can easily eliminate most if not all of the profit margin such as with bullion products. In these cases, if the buyer is willing to cover the Paypal fee, then I'll accept Paypal.

Folks I'm new here but have been on ebay for years. The reason I don't except paypal is the money transfer time, sure it can be shipped quicker but the seller has quite a wait to deal with. Also paypal froze a friends account and just about put his ebay store out of business, it took months to clear the mess they made just because he was selling so many items...They even had him prove everything through the IRS..Just plain to much control... I will buy through paypal if the seller takes only that...If it's not worth a simple visit to the post office or bank then it's not worth having...jmo Good Wife...buy it now price ... 1 rib ...paypal not accepted... |
