I recently set my "Saved Searches" to show only sellers who accept PayPal. In the excitement of bidding on a coin, I failed to notice that the seller accepted only postal money orders or cashier's checks. Not only was it inconvenient for me to get to the bank, but I also resented the implication that buyers are crooks. This seller requires not only cash via a cashier's check but also waits for the check to clear before shipping. Is there any legitimate reason for this antiquated policy in an age of electronic funds transfers? The seller has an excellent reputation, but I simply refuse to do any future business with him or anyone else who does not accept PayPal.

I'm almost 100% positive that the only reason someone wouldn't use PayPal is because they feel uncomfortable typing out their credit card number, and subsequently putting it on a website (even though we all know PayPal is extremely secure, it's just that the people who refuse to use it don't know that).

When a buyer gets a Money Order or Cashier's Check there are no fees for him. He has to wait a bit and make you wait but it's more profit for him. It hurts the seller more then anything else. And almost anyone that accepts checks will not ship until the check clears.

another reason is the fees the seller has to pay to PayPal, they can really add up. My average ebay sale is $92.40; multiply that by the fees and number of sales and it does add up after awhile. another reason is that the seller may not want to comply with the compliance issues in disputes or has lost too many disputes to PayPal.

You will lose much more by not accepting Paypal, by losing bids from the millions of eBayers that think just like the OP. The bids you lose will cost you much more than the fees. quote: another reason is that the seller may not want to comply with the compliance issues in disputes or has lost too many disputes to PayPal.
This is the more likely reason. Sellers' think a chargeback will never happen to them, so they don't follow the security rules that Paypal sets forth. Then they get burned, and stop taking Paypal. They think that Paypal is this big monster thief that runs around the Internet robbing from people. Well, ask anyone that has a brick and mortar store with a merchant account, chargebacks are a fact of business and happen all the time from everywhere. Paypal's rules are not that difficult to follow, and they all make perfect sense anyway.

Sellers don't accept PayPal because they want to sell me their coins cheap.

I like Paypal because as a seller, you get your money more quickly. The cost of having the money faster is the fees that Paypal charges. Everyone has to make money in their business, even Paypal.
I always pause before bidding on an item that does not take Paypal. I got burned once by a seller by sending a check, so I don't plan on it happening again.
With checks and money orders, a seller should wait for them to clear, which can take time. There are a lot of fake cashiers checks going around these days, so as a seller, you have to wait for the ok from you bank that it has cleared with no issues before you send the item. If you don't, then you WILL get burned eventually.

I always accept paypal for the reason Bobby stated, it opens up the sale to more potential buyers and the sale price is usually higher so it tends to offset some of the fees.
The point I was trying to make is that some sellers are shortsighted in this area and just don't want to pay the fees.
The one time I potentially got burned is when I had a buyer from overseas and was unaware of the 1% currency exchange fee in addition to regular fees, fortunately he paid by bank wire.
I like paypal and consider it a cost of doing business, will occasionally buy from a non-paypal seller but only if it is something I really, really want and the feedback, etc. all check out to my satisfaction.

My understanding of it is this,Paypal altho easy to use you can run into people who "charge back"(or at least thats the case in the uk) which would mean no coin and no money for the seller altho this is a very rare thing to happen.
Cheques can also bounce meaning if you'd have sent the item too soon and the person buying the coin "bounces" the cheque you end up with no coin or money.
I always wait for the Cheque to clear myself, the safest way.And use paypal.

another reason is that sometimes their country has nothing to do with PayPal. I have tried to make a PayPal account but my country is not listed.

Oh yes, bobby nothing shoots a coin to the top of my watch list faster than the listing saying "sorry no PayPal."

This is a simple answer. Paypal is expensive and unsecure for seller. Many sellers do not want the risk of chargeback due to fraud that may occur several months after a transaction takes place. Paypal take no responsibilty at all in these instances which to me shows their service is very unsecure.

quote: Paypal is expensive
Paypal is around the same rate as any other merchant account, in fact my rate is cheaper than most. I pay 2.2% and get 1.5% back when I spend it. Find a merchant account for .7%. Even at the highest rate of 2.9% it's in the merchant account ballpark with a net of 1.4% if you do it right. quote: and unsecure
It's only unsecure if you don't follow the rules. We've been using it for years without one iota of an issue. But we use it like they say to use it.

I use it like they tell me to use it as well and have had 2 chargebacks through fraud and paypal wiped their hands of responsibility...they tell you there is seller protection but it is only available if you like at "upper bum crack" and have 11 fingers and 9 toes.
