It looks like a legit split planchet to me. Just isn't worth that much though.

That's a very nice coin. I agree that it is overpriced though. It's a $20 error on a good day on ebay.

No photos of the edge, I'd pass on it. Most of my best finds would cost less. Let's have him send it to ANACS for a grade

Coop:Your example shows rough spots on the side where the planchet split. This coin is extremely roughed up on both sides. I can see that the reverse might be from a split planchet but what explains the obverse?

The weakness on the obverse is from the lack of planchet material to form a normal strike. They set the strike to the normal size height of the planchet. This one was thinner. Those who have the DVD, there are more examples on it well.
