Maybe this is sour grapes, but I will probably never drop the money required for this one when I complete my Buffalo Set. To me the 3 legged Buffalo is a strike/planchet error and is not a design variety. An over date strike like the Buff 1918-D 8/7 was the result of an intentional action by the mint and has more legitimacy than the 3 leg, although it doesn't really qualify as a design variety either. I have a sneaking suspicion that the inclusion of these holes in the Dansco Buffalo album are more a clever marketing technique resulting in exorbitant prices for a mint error. Just my opinion.

Paratrooper I just asked my coin dealer if he had a 3-l3gged Buffalo. It's not the dealer last posted about regarding the large cent. It's another one who's further away and whom I trust. He said he sold one at his last show. He also said that he could look around for another. He needs to know what grade you are looking for. If he finds anything I'll let you know and then give you his email. He also sells on e-bay. So what grade are you looking for?

Hi, I really appreciate you taking your own time to talk to your dealer. Especially for someone you don't really know on the internet. I'm primarily looking for low AU. I'm willing to consider XF-45 or high AU if I can get a really good deal. I'm also primarily looking for PCGS, but again, I'm willing to consider NGC or ANACS if the price is right.

Also, he's a dealer and understandably wants to make money. I'm kind of being a cheap skate and price shopping. I don't want to send him on a goose chase only to find I'm really stingy about price.

You'll generally see a range of Heritage prices for a given coin/grade/TPG. I'm looking to pay on the low side of that range.

That is what I have done with the purchase of a 1955 DDO

On a side note I really like those 1955/55 cents! It's such a dramatic error that it literally looks like you're getting double vision when you stare at it. Almost like a mirage.

No problem. It's obvious you very much want one and I would like to help a member if I can.

I apologize Paratrooper. Just a grumpy old guy that is hacked off that he has a hole in his Buffalo Dansco that he'll never be to afford to fill. Who am I to criticize what anyone wants to collect? I hope you find one you like.

Are the images pictures or scans? If they are scans, it is possible that this coin has nice luster and would look completely different in-hand. I would tend to think it had not been cleaned (and definitely not as obviously as it appears in the pics). I think the pics are scans and, coupled with the slight loss of detail from picturing it within the holder, appears completely different in these images than it would in-hand.

What is the return policy? If there is a good return policy, I'd get this one.

With scans like these, I have found it necessary to boost the contrast a little to get a more realistic view of what the coin will look like in hand. This is what I came up with afer boosting the contrast 40% and sharpening 40% (which is also necessary for scans of coins in slabs). I do not think the striations on the obverse are due to cleaning. I have seen a number of Buffaloes with this that were definitely not cleaned.

In my opinion, if you are already willing to spend $1,000+ you might as well add 25% to that amount and get an example with "eye appeal." But if you have set your max $$$ maybe this coin IS for you? Obviously this coin is appealing to you (and in the end that's all that matters) otherwise you wouldn't have posted pics and requested advice/opinions. I usually find when collectors post/ask for opinions they are usually needing some convincing that the coin is or is not the right piece for them.
