Okay, I admit it, I've no idea about mint marks in the USA. So questions are aplenty:

1. When did the S mark become obsolete from circulation coins?
2. How come many American coins we come across up here don't have mint marks at alL?
3. When did they start using D marks?
Well I guess that's not too many questions, but it is obfuscating, especially why many coins don't have marks at all, are they just worn off or not struck on?

Thanks

I think 1955 was the last S mint mark for circulation, I could stand to be corrected

Absence of mint mark designates Philadelphia or an error.

Not sure about Denver mint start date.

Oh thank you so much. That explains it all, but it's still takes a while to interpret it all. Ohh boy.

For circulating coins greater than a cent, the San Franciso mint shut down in 1954 for good. When it restarted in 1968, cents were made for circulation for a few years (1968-1974), but the other coins were proofs only.

I'm still holding two uncirculated rolls of those 1968-s cents. But with a mintage of 261 million I'm afraid it will be a long time before there is much appreciation. Nice souvenirs.

Just to add to this, nickels were minted at San Fransisco from 1968-1970 for circulation as well.
