I'm really sorry to beat the 3-Leg dead horse. But I think I found what I'm looking for, and it's such a major purchase I would like some experienced opinions. Below is a PCGS AU-50 1937-D 3-Leg. I can pick it up out the door for $1225. I would say it's fairly priced. Not a steal, but not a ripoff. I see a couple minor blemishes, like spotting in a couple places. But nothing really major. Do you think that would be a good purchase for the said price? Thanks for any feedback. Sean.

paratrooper, to my semi-experienced eyes, I say it looks like it might have been cleaned. Don't take my word for it please. Someone more knowledgable will probably be around soon enough.

I'm really bad at spotting cleaning. But PCGS slabbed it, so they determined it's not. Of course, I'm not going to say they're always right either.

it also looks cleaned to me. but it is a nice looking coin but personally I would not pay over 1000.00 for it. but I would have to hold a gun to my head to make myself pay for it if that makes any sense at all. but if you happy with the coin and the price is right for you then buy it . but you have to ask yourself first.. will I be able to get my money back later? myself I say no at $1225.00 it is already maxed out for that coin. hope that helps without coinfusing you too much Gary too

I agree with it looking cleaned. I know you have your heart set on a 3-Legger and I'm glad you are posting here first instead of jumping in.
IMHO I think you should set a price that you are willing to spend on one of these coins. With that in mind keep searching until you are sure that you would a coin that has a nice grade and is at a decent price. I'd also check the gray sheet prices if you haven't already.

Sean, The coin shop in Great Falls, where I live, has 2 3 legged buffs. Both are graded by ANACS and are AU 53 and VF 20. $1600 for the AU and $1000 for the VF. This is their store ebay account: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZhisnherzQQhtZ-1I never really tried talking them down in prices. However, they do seem to sell stuff on ebay for less than they offer me when I come in and buy things. Maybe I should start being a little more difficult... Ty

First, unless I win the lottery, I'll never have $1225 to spend for a single coin. I have just started collecting Buffalo nickels, after all these years, and have looked at a lot of nice ones in my coin store. That coin, in AU-50, I would think is worth the $1225 price tag.

Although I think it would have been harder to resell, I liked the one you posted earlier with the "war paint" better than this one. Being a PCGS slab resale won't be any problem but the "eye appeal" of this coin doesn't do it for me.

I say cleaned over dipped. You could find a better looking example for that price. Are you sure that coin is holdered 58? I disagree with 007, PCGS or not, I think you would have a hard time trying to unload this piece without taking a hit when there are better looking original skinned VF-XF to be had at favorable prices.

Sean, my approach to buying coins I intend to put this type of money into has worked well for me. After buying a couple of coins in higher ranges and compromising on exactly what I wanted it to look like and then being disappointed every time I look at it, I now insist that it is pleasing to me. I just passed on a 1955 DDO in AU-55ish condition because for the money it just did not make me happy. After looking at Heritage Auctions and studying what 1955s were going for there, I did not buy. Why, to put $1,500.00 into the coin, it did not make the happiness (eye appeal) grade. If you are trying to talk yourself into this coin, don't. In regards to your nickel, ask yourself, if I put another 2 or 3 hundred into this buy would I be much happier and would it be a better investment? That is what I have done with the purchase of a 1955 DDO, I am now looking in the $2,000.00 range, it will pass my happiness test and be a better investment. So, with these standards I probably would pass on your coin. That is unless the pics really do not do it justice. The strike seems weak, there are blemishes and a strong possibility that it has been cleaned. Strike three for me. Jim p.s. Go to Heritage and look at their archives, great reference material. http://coins.ha.com/?ic=homepage_browse

I really don't know whether its worth the price as I'm not familiar with the Buffalo nickel series. But to me it doesn't have the eye appeal.

I find it hard to believe that PCGS could miss such an obvious case of "cleaning." Thus, I wonder if we're mistaking the streaking on the obverse, and it is really the result of something else? Hey...just a thought! I don't see similar streaking on the reverse.
Eye appeal is highly subjective...and photography can greatly enhance (or diminish) eye appeal depending on the skill of the photographer. I would hate to make a decision on this coin (or most others) without a better idea of the quality of the pictures and what this coin looks like in the hand!

I would pass. These coins are fairly available in circulated grades and you can probably find one that has no questions as to overall eye appeal as this one seems to have.

Jim is right. You have to be happy with the coin, eye appeal.
I had a bought a 6 cent piece 3 years ago but returned it because I hate fingerprints.
I just purcased another one (way nicer) but paid 3 times more for it.
I am very happy that I waited and paid 3 times more because,
I love the coin, and I don't have to look at a fingerprint everytime I take it out.

Paratrooper I just asked my coin dealer if he had a 3-l3gged Buffalo. It's not the dealer last posted about regarding the large cent. It's another one who's further away and whom I trust. He said he sold one at his last show. He also said that he could look around for another. He needs to know what grade you are looking for. If he finds anything I'll let you know and then give you his email. He also sells on e-bay. So what grade are you looking for?
