Has anyone got a link to a good reference on the bronze currency from this period please? Just done a swap a few Romans for a bag of Byzantine things but, as per usual, I have no idea what's what You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

Best thing to do is acquire a copy of Sear Byzantine. Also try and get some old auction catalogs, there is a lot of useful information in those things as well. Wildwinds has a lot of the more common Byzantine types, those are worth taking a look at. Maybe you can match some of what you have to some coins posted on there.

Thank you so much for the advise guys but I have decided they are pants and am putting them all on ebay. The quality is poor, the feel is poor and if totally honest, I have a Roman Imperial of Constantine II that is worth more to me than this load of crump. Why would anyone collect this rubbish?

Not every ancient coin looks like a work of art. Byzantine history is just as interesting as that or Rome. The empire lasted for a thousand years. While there coins are not as beautiful and to some down right ugly they circulated and were accepted throughout the known world. It's OK that you don't like them, more for us that do.

Try the VCOINS (ancient) site. Currently has over 2,000 Byzantine coins available for sale. Also a great site to identify ancient coins, and current market values of close equivalent coins. Excellent choice range if you wish to purchase an ancient coin for yourself, as well.

Someone recommended the introductory booklet by Grierson called "Byzantine Coinage" (not to be confused with his superb large hardback book of the same name). It is freely available in pdf and here is an annotated version with bookmarks that you can use when reading the pdf to navigate a bit faster. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...nnotated.pdfIf you download this version and view it as a pdf the bookmarks will come up on the left and you can click on them to go to, say, copper coinage, or Justinian, or whatever.

Sorry echizento, I spoke a little out of turn saying that. Maybe I just got handed a poor batch, hey, wouldn't be the first time I got ripped off! As per usual after looking in depth at the links and info from you guys my interest is growing, along with my understanding, about why the coins are so different and what the symbols mean on the different coins. Please remember that at the side of most of the folks here I am a novice collector and have a lot to learn.
I actually found a few I like & will post pics tomorrow so if you wouldn't mind a little ID help?
kind regards,
Met.

No worries, I didn't take any offense. I was just trying to point out that while there coins aren't very beautiful the history of the Byzantine empire is. They contributed to the development of Europe and the East in the Dark and Middle ages.

Beauty is in the eye of you know who. I have very few Byzantines myself for much the same reason as MetDet71. With the exception of the gold (beyond my budget) I like very few Byzantines outside of (big) Justinian, Anastasius and the Christ facing AE's
