Well done!
At this point I think you'll find lighting will be your major problem. But I don't see anything wrong with what you did. Just make sure you compare the image to your coin to ensure that they look pretty much the same.
Also, if you don't already have it, I suggest buying Numismatic Photography, 2nd Edition by Mark Goodman. It'll come in handy for those coins you just can't quite get imaged correctly such as proofs, PL's and DMPL's. And lots of other info to help you tweak those shots that don't quite come out to your satisfaction.

Oooo, one thing I forgot to mention. It looks like your lighting is coming from the northeast. In general the human eye/mind combination prefers lighting from the northwest.

Thanks kanga. I am going to search and see what others are using. For this shot (and all my others so far) I used the sun but with the new lens I will move inside with a tripod and lights.

Quote: Canon rebates are back. Looks like the 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro lens has a $150 rebate. That takes it down from $1049 to $899. I think that is a fair price for a great lens. Deal lasts until 1/4/14. Well thanks a whole bunch now you have given me something ELSE to lust after. It would fit so nicely in-between my 65mm and 150mm... PS: NICE shots & freehand too - obviously you don't drink coffee! -----Burton

Quote: something ELSE to lust after Lust is what the L stands for in the lens, correct? The kids don't know it yet but instead of getting the new XBox One for Christmas we are getting a family 100mm L lens. How exciting.

Keep in mind about the 100mm Macro L: it has essentially only one advantage over the non-IS "original" version - Image Stabilization. Freehand, in the field, that's huge for a macro lens and it's a coup for Canon to have implemented effective IS in a macro lens.
However, for coins and static photography, IS means nothing whatsoever. You'll never benefit from it.

Thanks Dave. I will do some looking for a non-IS 100mm L lens. A quick search didn't find anything. I do take Baseball photos so IS would not be a waste. From all the reviews it looks like the $400 extra over a regular non-L lens is worth it.

Very nice indeed! I have used the setting sun on occasion (when I can find some time before sunset) and while indoors I would use a 5000K light bulb as mentioned in; http://www.tabletopstudio.com/docum...tography.htmThere are some pretty good tips on that site.

The 100mm is also a tremendous portrait lens given its' world-class sharpness, and if that focal length works for you on the baseball diamond, the lens is plenty fast enough at f/2.8 to be on the list. Me, I think 100mm - even on a crop sensor - is a bit short unless you're at field level. If you're shooting from the stands, consider Canon's "best kept secret" 55-250mm zoom. It's hardly an "L" lens, but for $200 with effective IS you can't go wrong. It's relatively slow (f/5.6@250mm) but can still stop action with the right light (both 250mm, f/8, 1/500@ISO200): Those were at f/8. This, from >250ft in the Linc, f/5.6, 1/2000@ISO400: This, from ~330ft at the Linc, during a night game (no sunlight), f/5.6, 1/320@ISO1600: You can call me a fan of the 55-250.

Thanks. I have the 70-300mm IS already. The games I shot involve my kids so I get pretty close.
Nice to know about portraits. My wife does a little Hig School Senior picture work on the side. Didn't think about that use.

Then you don't need a 55-250. Keep in mind on a crop sensor the 100mm is a 150mm lens. You're going to need a lot more relief than you might think for portraiture; it's almost appropriate to call it a "long prime."

Picked up the 100mm 2.8L last night. I took a few practice free hand pictures. So far I have to say that lens is amazing. Today's task is to find a tripod (nobody in my area sells a copy stand) and some lighting. I stopped at a few stores last night and didn't find anything usable (don't live near an IKEA). With any luck I will try to post some pictures tonight.
Next I have to figure out the camera controls. I used an AT1 back in the olden days and that was all manual. I have to see if I can figure this XSi out.

Not a great one yet. I'm on my way out to get a tripod and lights. This was shot free hand and only cropped. No other editing. I can't believe how crisp this lens makes the raw photo. I can't wait to see what happens when I'm not holding the camera and I use the remote capabilities and adjust camera settings in manual.

Dave, When you get a chance could you critique this one. The dark edge at 11 o'clock is on the coin. All I did was crop the photo. I did not adjust lighting. I picked up a tripod and a an led ring light for the lens. Side by side the color is almost a dead match to the coin. I have a feeling some low ball collector may like this one.

Here is another to analyze at some point. I had posted the over edited photos a while back in the grading section. Old set up. New set up with no editing other then cropping. The thing I need to figure out is how to get the luster. I picked up some of it but there is more. Any advice would be appreciated. I have 6 more high AU WLH's coming today. I hope to put them in the grading section at some point.
