Gold Superman auction already $1,000

You have to look at completed autions to see the value of a coin. It does not matter what someone is asking for or what the current bid is. So far the highest completed auction is $1135 CDN.

The guy who bought the coins for $999 and reselling for $1299 is taking a big chance. The mimimum price he needs to sell the coin for is $1150, just to break even.

@omxfl - You got a point but this is not any ordinary coin. It is superman. Not just coin collectors will want it but also Superman fans. I was talking to some big fans of Superman on the weekend and I showed them the page and they asked where could I get one but of course the mint is sold out. They could get it from Canada post but they will not last forever either.

Secondly compared to the other coins the mintage of the gold is ONLY 2000. That leaves A LOT of people out who may want to complete the whole set and they may pay anything to complete it. Some people may even keep more then one for a few years leaving the demand lasting longer.

The ones which hare sold out are the ones which I thought would be marked first.

For only 2,000 coins, the Superman Gold coin has a worldwide market . Meanwhile, by way of example, the 2,167 coins sold as Bank of Canada hoard 1914 $5 gold coin had primarily a Canadian market. Nearly a year later that coin is still valued at a premium, if you can find one.

It won't take long before all the gold Superman coins are in diehard collector hands. I don't care for cartoons of men in tights but I sure like the coin. Look at the price people pay for the early editions of Superman comic books - many, many thousands. In the last three months there were about 150 ebay sales of Superman items worth over C$750. That is just on ebay - imagine all the private sales and auctions elsewhere. This Superman coin is the official rendition of the first Superman comic book and is a must-have item for at least the hundreds or thousands of Superman collectors.

I'm thinking it will be valued at $1,500 very soon. The demand curve for this coin has considerable price elasticity (Economics 101). Limited supply for a comparatively large market.

i agree with the previous post and I've been saying this since day 1 of my posts on this series..I was in the Vancouver PO today and scored the remaining 4 coins of the series they have in stock ..1. Shield 2. Man of Steel 3. Hologram and 4. Modern Day..Everything else is Sold out and unavailable and they have no more at their warehouse so I'm guessing by the end of the week it will be stamps only....The Vancouver RCM Boutique had nothing but said they might get something next week. As far as my impression of the coins goes now that I've got some in hand ...I generally avoid colorized coins like the plague and am a vintage collector of Canada and some USA issues but I love these coins!..Everything about them is a great artistic endevour by the RCM and DC Comics. At a risk of repeating myself I would say these coins may escalate in value rather rapidly and unlike some members I think they will hold their appreciated value just like the Comic Books do.

I agree now 17th September. But it would have been interesting to read that kind of comments the release day ...

When horse racing it's over, I do also know who's the winner.

Ya its easy to say that now lol, personally on the first few days I put the hologram as the hottest coin and then the shield as next hottest coin, I put the gold coin as not hot at all lol being only 14K gold and all...boy was I wrong on the gold coin , I also thought the 1/2 oz modern day super man was weak as well based on it being only 1/2 oz of silver and with 15000 mintage...I was wrong again....

im gonna go out on a limb here and predict that within 2 years the Superman gold coin will hit 5,000.00! You read it here first! I figure for my 60th post it may as well be something to remember.

I called to only order the Eagle coin and RCM agent gently talked me into buying the gold Superman coin. I had buyers remorse for the first few days since they did not have any pictures of the coin. Why would anyone buy something sight unseen! I think I was lucky rather than smart. With the RCM, the odds were that the coin was going to be 'ho hum'. Hindsight is 20/20 now that it is sold out and in strong demand. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how it holds its value.

Coins appreciate in value for all sorts of reasons. One of the coins I don't understand is the 2002 Queen Mother $1 silver. 10,000 issued at $50 and they still command a $225 price a decade later.

I beg to differ about the Superman gold coin hitting $5000.00. It is, after all, a coin, not a comic book. I wouldn't be surprised if a gold clad version of this coin pops up for $49.99 on the shopping channel just in time for X-mas. Not to mention how attractive this coin is to counterfeiters.

I think it'll hit $1500 tops, then drop back to $1000 after the market is flooded with them, and that will be the end of it. Next....

The Queen Mother coin was trending at $400 just a few years ago. It has dropped substantially in price since.... one never knows for sure...

@ ALLSPICE......im not sure how 2000 pieces of anything could flood a market but I understand you have doubts...The thing is that the market is flooded with queen elizabeths family coins but there is only one SUPERMAN gold coin and probably a million collectors who have the money to buy one which is why I have reason to believe this coin will soar in demand.

I have to agree with Allspice, I don't see the gold Superman going for $5000. Tops in my opinion is $2000. Hard core comic book collectors who have $5000 to spend are not going to pay that much money for a coin. They are going to spend that money on high grade Golden Age Superman comics.

@ Cassidy77, well, I'm not sure if 2000 gold 14K coins is a low mintage. Perhaps higher prices/value would be more feasible for a .9999 1/2 ounce gold coin with that mintage, or about 500 for only a 14K gold coin.

Frankly, I would liked to have seen this series presented as a subscription, with the unveiling of one coin at a time per month or bi-weekly, with the first release available at the time of, or shortly after the Superman movie was released.

Then, as collectors had the time to build a collection (emotionally & monetary-wise), the big climax would have been the unveiling of a .9999 1/2 ounce gold coin, which of course, all collectors would have jumped on to complete their collection. The mintage could then have been 5000 and still in high demand. Perhaps that would have made this series more exciting.

But all coins were unveiled at once, which gave collectors more choices to make their own sets, whether that be 2 or 3, or all 7 coins, depending on the preference of the average collector and what they could afford.

I'm just bracing myself for a quick rise in price and then a drop, which would be a shame for this amazing and super series! But, of course, anything can happen, so it's anybody's guess...
