The gold superman coin has just as much potential to be worth $5,000 in two years as the Superman lunchbox that I saw at a big box store the other day. I don't understand why people think Superman coins have long term potential monetary gain just because there are other Superman things that are highly collectable. There are hardcore mustang fans that would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for old mustangs or mustang parts, but if the Royal Canadian Mint releases a coin with a mustang on it, all of a sudden all the mustang owners are going to want the coin? How does that make any sense? Why would anyone think that someone who buys expensive Superman comics would be interested in coins? Just because someone slapped a picture of superman on it? These coins have NOTHING to do with superman at all besides the fact that someone paid the licensing to put the pictures on a coin. It isn't like coins were one of Supermans weapons, it's not like Superman collected coins, I never ever saw Superman doing anything special with coins.... so you expect me to believe that hardcore Superman fans will just buy ANYTHING with a picture of Superman on it even if the item has NOTHING to do with superman? I really don't understand this hype and I don't see how these coins will hold any value after this initial hype is over.

DC need to be advised to mention in some of the next Superman episodes, that he "also collects coins, and actually has some RCM coins collection". Actually, it good to create an Episode, where for some reason many "Glass Ladybug" coins have been stolen all over the world. Clark Kent, being coin collector also lost this way his coin. Without suspecting something bad, he tries to re-buy the coin via ebay, but suddenly sees that the prices raised due to coins population decrease. ...As a Superman he decides to find the truth in this story and need to face on his way with powerful enemy, that created a device, capable to destroy all, which needs the Murano Glass for the operation..... wow, that's could be great. I inspired by the "Phineas and Pherb" animated series that my son watches. For the modern movies - it doesn't matter, what about Superman movie will be, just the Superman needs to appear there.....

LOL.. members are sawing on the wrong limb..im sitting a lot higher than you think...Personally I was totally shocked by the RCM unveiling of their Superman series and it came as a complete surprise to me even as a Master club member I didnt get any advance notice just an email. I dont generally follow the RCM releases and seldom buy them. The same is true of the Canada Post connection to the Superman release. I didnt even know about it until I logged back on to this forum so I thank all the Forum members for their due diligence. I think the general public coin and stamp collectors and Superman collectors in general are just waking up to the fact of this unusual collectible release. Yes there is a ton of Superman memorabilia out there besides comic books. Government released Coins however are not memorabilia and these coins will go into many different coin cats forever and their values listed every year hereafter. Besides Coins and Stamps I would bet that Comic Collectors are the next biggest collecting group of people who throw any ammount of money to get what they want.incl. a 5000.00 gold Superman will be a reality in due course.

Interesting debate and points of view on the Superman coins. My opinion is that this is going to keep climbing and be at or near $2,000 in the next month or even less. Long term it has tremendous potential to maintain and grow in market value. When people make comparisons, it's really hard to make a good argument against this coin having extraordinary potential for growth. Comparing it to car collector is a different ball game and really not a good comparison. Two totally different markets and collectors. Look at it for what it is, a scarce coin with a highly collectible subject matter for a large collector/interest group. Let's compare it to what up until now has been the "gold standard" for RCM coin appreciation in the last couple of years - the Glass Ladybug. - Mintage - Superman 2,000. Ladybug 5,000. Clear winner: Superman - Precious Metal Value (roughly) - Superman $300. Ladybug $23. Clear winner: Superman - Collector Base - Superman very broad and multi generational. Ladybug, not sure but not even close to Superman. Probably the highest disparity of my comparison - Innovation: Superman, first gold coin with Superman. Ladybug, first coin with Murano glass. Winner: Subjective, but I'd call it a draw. - One other main factor that needs to be considered, once these gold coins get in the hands of true Superman collectors (which are many), very few will come back onto the market. With the limited mintage already, I feel this coin will be really tough to pick up a year from now. Put the supply and demand principle to it and it's the perfect storm for strong secondary market appreciation. Disclaimer: I did not purchase the Gold Superman coin nor do I intend to. For me, it's too much money locked up into one item in my collection. I'm a coin collector and would have a hard time selling anything in my collection.

I can see why people would think the gold superman coin will climb high, but lets not forget that the lady bug coin is a series and that is the reason for its climb. As the series grows in popularity others will want a set of their own. Where as the superman coin will like top off at a peak and in the future fall. It's just the cycle of NCLT coin.
Don't get me wrong I liked these coins from the start and even gave one to my kid. But that's the reality of these type of coins. Of course I could be wrong and hope that I am because I'm also keeping a few in my collection.

Car collectors have very deep pockets, I know a few and they collect anything too do with the cars they collect, if the RCM put out gold and silver 60s and 70s era muscle car coins and advertised like they did with the superman coins, the car coins would be sold out as well. But not sure of all the copy write issues involved as your dealing with multiple car company's. Could be a nitemare trying to get all of that legal stuff together etc.

I hope the Mint does not produce more of these pop culture coins. Unfortunately, they probably will, but I can dream as well as the rest of you soothsayers. As for Superman/Ladybug, I'd be shocked if the SM out performs the Bug over time. It would have to sell for somewhere over $6k in 2015 for that to happen. The LB, with 2.5 times the mintage, sold out faster than the gold SM coin. The subsequent bugs with 5 times the mintage sold out even quicker. Why with 'millions' of SM collectors out there, media saturation and a much larger distribution channel than existed in 2011, did it take so long to sell a measly 2k units? I too don't see a correlation between SM collectors and coin collection. There have been SM coins/tokens produced in the past by other mints. As far as I know, none have appreciated significantly. I will suggest that we are seeing a false market created by speculation. As another example, there are approximately 4-5M tickets sold to NHL hockey games every year in Canada alone and many of those tickets exceed $200 a pop. Some NHL memorabilia is highly collectible, yet the RCM can barely give away NHL themed coins..... If you like these SM coins, great. If you make money off them, great. I'll be over on the sidelines waiting for the Mint to get back to their kitting.
