It's a small black coin about the size of your index finger nail. No wording or numbers. One side has what looks like a three tower castle. The other has a symbol that looks slightly like a figure walking. The hands and feet are bulbous like clown shoes.

Any ideas? The dealer says he thinks it might be Spanish but isn't sure.

Hi it is impossible to tell without a picture but the figure may be a walking or rampant lion the reverse is the symbol of Castille and the obverse Lion ( Catilla y Leon ) and probably the denominatio is a maravedis

see sample

here a 2 maravedis

that is a 4 but your may be a smaller denomination and probably dark copper.

Sorry, I don't have a picture. But doing a Google search for maravedis I found this image, which is the closest I could find to it. The only difference is that the lion on my coin looks like he's standing. Though, I didn't think that sideways he could be on all fours.

I should have mentioned that this coin is at the store and I was wondering about buying it. The price was only $10 so I think I might snag it the next time I'm there.

Is the coin silver, or copper? It could be a Charles IV cuartilla (1/4 real). Can you see any writings on either side of the castle?

It would help if you could post a picture - do you have access to a flat-bed scanner?

Cheers,

~Roman

No, I don't have a scanner and it's at the coin store. Like I said, there is no writing whatsoever on either side and it's really small. the coin is black in color and the figures are dark grey.

Also, I did finally identify a coin I've been carrying around as a pocket piece for 20+ years. I bought this at an antique sale for $7. Now it looks like it's worth 13.

Dear MAGUSXXX, the coin in your wallet is a Byzantine follis/nummis of emperor Justin 2 and Queen Sophia.... and has absolutely nothing to do with Spain.
