I am not certain what to make of this 8 Reales other than that it seems to be made of copper rather than silver, and that it is only 20.1 grams. Also, it appears to be 1840 Is mintmark. Was there even a mint that used this mark? Thanks!

Given the O.M. assayer, seems they used the "Is" as an evasive technique in place of the "Zs" of Zacatecas.

Just a guess, but it seems plausible, no (esp. since the capital "I" and "Z" are similar looking from a quick glance). Interesting piece, anyway.

Bob, do you know this one?

Looks like a contemporary counterfeit of a Zacatecas 8 Reales. It is definitely underweight, has wrong stamp on both sides and the Is mintmark never existed. Color is off and does look like a debased metal or copper as the OP suggested.

Nice coin by the way with plenty of history! These were heavily counterfeited as they were used for trade in many countries.
