Hello CCF.

I have a simple question. Where are the best areas to strike it good when metal detecting? This question isn't necessarily limited to states and places, but also specific areas like parks and forest preserves, etc.

I know that east-er states will yield older coins because that is where the country started at, then expanded.

My current sites are in Cook County, IL and Stark County, IN. These are the places where I have homes and/or I have relatives that I can readily go to. Any professional guesses as to what I could find. What %'s do I have for finding coins?

Around here I do 99% of my detecting at schools and parks, once in a while I'll get permission to hunt someones yard but not often.

Any place where people congregated at one time. Around old trees, Churches, swimming holes, fields that had fairs, cross roads, homesteads, railroad stops, grange halls, CCC camps, old trails or roads, old baseball fields, etc. See if you area has any Sanborn maps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanborn_Maps). Overlay the maps in google earth and look for old building. Go to the historical society and find old maps and pictures.

Two places I go to right off the bat is driveways and under clotheslines when searching a residence or homestead. In parks I go to the swing sets and monkey bars, around good climbing trees, paths leading to restrooms, and also a good spot is where people set up their folding chairs when watching games.
