I discovered that there is a small monthly coin show in my area so naturally I had to go as soon as possible. Just got back and while it isn't anything special (usually 4-5 coin dealers and 4 -5 stamp dealers) and generally modern coins there was one dealer who had, as he said, around 1500 Ancient coins. Unforunately I couldn't see a lot of them because they were in a smaller room than normal (I am told) and he didn't have the back table where he usually kept his Ancient's since they don't sell as well as the modern coins.

Luckily one of the two boxes he did have out was right up my alley. All Alexandrian tetradrachms and Ptolemy's and then a couple Sassanian. I didn't have the cash with me to buy the Ptolemy's or any of the Tetradrachms but I had the urge not to leave empty handed so I channeled my inner AncientNoob and picked out a Sassanian I really like. It was also really neat to sit and chat with him since he had an excellent knowledge of a lot of things Ancient and was an archaeologist before he had retired plus had been collecting since the early 60s.

It was an awesome experience and I really enjoyed being able to hold the coins before purchase. I will definitely be there every time they roll in and apparently there is a big show in Winnipeg in November.

Anyways story time over.

fantastic details on that one! one of the prettier ones I've seen.

the last coin show I went to was worth the trip just to talk to the single guy there who was a dedicated ancient dealer.

plus, I dropped a 20 dollar bill out of my wallet while I was paying him for a purchase, the guy tracked me down to give it back to me. I went back to his table and spent the 20 on another coin.

Beautiful coin, well struck with very little wear. I'm looking to buy some of these.

Something looks off to me. I mean, at a glance it looks like a fabulous coin, but the high relief yet marshmallow-y (puffy) devices and the dotted border give me pause.

I really haven't examined these types closely (OK, at all) but a quick comparison with similar coins leave me wondering if this could be a cast coin.

I'm probably wrong.

Noob-- what do you think?

It looks just right to me. The flan has the usual rims which look pounded down before striking (e.g. 8:00-9:00 on the obverse). I have no doubt is an excellent genuine coin.

Chrsmat thats awesome. I probably would do the same. This dealer has a repeat customer in me if not just for the conversation.

TIF you scared me there. Thank you Warren for clearing it up.

Thanks Noob. I must say I saw it and had to have it. I blame you for my interest. Your coins always look so cool.

Even better for you is that there is no competition between us ;) I don't think he sells online at all (forgot to ask last time) and don't know if he makes any trips to American coin shows.
