I barely even looked at this coin when I bought it in a lot, I just assumed it was a normal low grade Three Cent. Today I was taking some of my coins out of their 2x2's when I realized this one was heavier than my other Three Cent Nickels. The others were 1.9g and this one weighed 2.3g. Is 2.3g in the normal weight range?

When I checked out the design closely, it looked a little off. The longacre doubling looked too extreme in some parts, almost to the point of looking like it was double struck in collar. And some other parts of it just don't look quite right to me. I don't know why anyone would take the time to counterfeit such a common date Three Cent Nickel though..

What do you guys think?

I'm not much experienced with counterfeits, but the date looks a bit off.

Something doesn't look right. IMHO looks too sloppy to be legit.

Lets wait for the pros though.

Wow, that is *so* cool. No doubt in my mind it's a contemporary fake. They're worthwhile simply because nobody expects them, making them all the easier to pass.

They don't look like any of mine.

I love my 3c nickels and I'm sure I can tell the real ones from the fake ones!

I agree, looks like a fake. Aside from the date, take a look at the dentiles. Aside from looking irregular in general, look just below and to the right of the date; they all of a sudden look like a set of steps.

I guess I had better look very closely, even when buying coins for around $20!

Thanks for the confirmation guys! The reverse isn't too far off, but the obverse is the give away. It wasn't a coin I wanted so it makes little difference to me, I had thrown it in my "to sell" pile without even checking it out. You can be sure I would have noticed it right away if it was a coin for my collection or when I was taking pictures of it to sell! Anybody collect fakes?

That is the first fake common date 3CN I have ever viewed! Steve Caruso may be interested in it for The Black Cabinet. I checked, and he does not have any 3CNs in it.

I know contemporary counterfeits are considered "collectible". There could be some interest in it.
