I was not aware of that... Would that be considered a variety?

Sorry it's the "9" that has the pointed tail or square tail...
yes it is a variety...it was a new hub making a new die that continued into 1965 and beyond
the pointed tail nine would be before 1964.. the squared tail 9... after 1964
The change was early in 1964 so the pointed tail dime is harder to find.. some say around 2 mil made....

Might be worthwhile to check the proof 1964 dimes. Are they pointed or blunt? What about the other early 60's dimes? I'm wondering about the possibility of a difference between the proof hubs and business strike hubs and one or more proof hubbed dies being used to make business strikes.(similar to how the 98 - 2000 WAM cents were produced.)

The proof ones have more of a curved tail on the 9 compared to the business strike dimes.

I found the image we are looking for. It is on a proof 1964 dime.

I didn't find any other images for this variety on business strike dimes, yet.

It was the pointed tail business strikes that were the promoted "hot" item back then. If the normal business strike was a blunt tail and the proofs were pointed tail.....

Or are there blunt tail proofs as well?

Here is a small sampling I found on heritage:
Question-On-The-Pointed-1964-Dimes?
The Proof pointed is slightly different than the normal one. But why is it different? The die may have been over polished? Something had to cause it to change shape? Hub wear?
