Hello all,
Laid up at home recuperating from an upper respiratory infection and inner ear infection. Don't know how the bugs got me but they did :)
Had my son go out and get me $25 in cents to see if I could get lucky... Well, don't know about lucky but after the first 500 coins (tired myself out so after this it's back to bed) I was wondering what your thoughts are and if the pre 1983 cents are worth holding on to. Here is the breakdown:
1 1957-D 3 1959-D 3 1962-D 2 1964 4 1964-D 2 1966 2 1967 1 1968 3 1968-D 1 1969 5 1969-D 1 1970 9 1970-D 1 1971 8 1971-D 1 1972 1 1972-D 2 1973 4 1973-D 1 1973-S 2 1974 4 1974-D 1 1974-S 3 1975 8 1975-D 4 1976 5 1976-D 2 1977 4 1977-D 6 1978-D 3 1979 5 1979-D 7 1980 6 1980-D 9 1981 5 1981-D 5 1982 9 1982-D
So out of the first 500 coins 129 are all copper, only 1 wheatie, 3 in the 50's -- 23 in the 60's -- 75 in the 70's and 28 in the early 80's...
Thoughts? If the coppers are worth holding on to I will but am looking for those copper collectors to help me out. Thanks!

I personally keep all 82 and older pennies. Make sure you wiegh the 82's or do the ping test because only like a third are copper. I don't have a scale so I just put all the 82's in a separate jar.

I don't know about that. Most of the '82s I find are copper!

Here's the final tally. 2500 coins searched and this is what I ended up with. Thoughts? Is this a fairly average take?
1 - 1941D 1 - 1944P 1 - 1945P 1 - 1950D 1 - 1952D 3 - 1956D 2 - 1957D 1 - 1958P 1 - 1958-D 5 - 1959-D 1 - 1962 Canadian 1 - 1979 Canadian 1 - 1991 Canadian 1 - 2001 2 Cent Euro
~350 Coppers from 1960 through 1982
I was certainly hoping for more wheaties but it was a fun afternoon traversing through the coins!

I would keep them all, and I also put the 1982's in separate jars.

Probly just below average number of coppers - depending on your area. you can save the coppers, but unless you save a ton ( literally) its not worth all that much - and that eats up time and takes up space and ties up capital. But it's up to you. I just sold over 30000 copper penniesZ

I keep copper. I average 11 wheaties a box, looks like you got 12. Nice!

The amount of wheat's are on about par with my $25 boxes I get. I also just keep the 81 and older pennies I don't keep the 82s.

You can get a 0.01g scale on ebay for about $5. Works great for the 1982's.

Thanks o-train. Already have a scale, will be setting up the 71 1982's I found for weighing this weekend.

Appears that you had fun ... that is what matters. I assume you are not counting the 1982 cents in your approximate 350 coppers found ... if so your 14% copper find rate is a bit low compared to what my roll search data shows. Quote: Make sure you weigh the 82's or do the ping test because only like a third are copper. This is not an accurate statement ... as you will discover when you purchase a scale and weigh the coins you have set aside. Both mints struck 1982 cents on 95% copper planchets for the majority of the year. I kept track of 1982 composition for a 16 box search run ... and my data shows that 87% of the 1187 total 1982 dated cents that I found were 95% copper. David

Now that you have them all sorted out by date, you need to breakout your copy of the CherryPickers Guide and figure out if there are any real scores in there... that 52D has a D over S worth as much as 400x the regular value. The 56D, 56P & 59D all have pickable varieties... there's a project if you are laid up for another week :-) :-(

Srs, your findings are just about average with mine, [Ive done roughly 30 boxes in the past nine months]. Can I ask where you are located / bank or CU?

I was laid up ill, my son went and picked it up for me. I believe it was a local Centier bank. I was grateful for something to do while I was laid up. Have to go again only this time while I'm not sick...
