Robert Lovett designed a cent in 1861 for The Confederate States of America. He used the Lady Liberty on the obverse of this Store card for the CSA cent.

Sellers pics.

This is a very pleasing specimen of one of my favorite tokens that was struck in a variety of metals. At the risk of ruffling the feathers of some fellow CWT enthusiasts, I've long felt that this and similar tokens should be cited as "pre-CWT's" in the storecard books. I've felt the same about the Marshall House tokens, dated 1859; which I personally regard as the "first" CWT. Their link to the CWT series is obvious, and listing them helps one understand how the CWT series blossomed as it did ... Thoughts, anyone?

ExoGuy, I agree. I believe that all store & merchant tokens issued before the official start of the CW should NOT be included as CWTs.

While these are obviously pre-Civil War, I do think that they should be represented in CWT books, just as the post-CW tokens are so recognized. Doing this, authors could better represent the CW tokens in context, methinks. I guess that I didn't express that sentiment clearly enough in my prior posting.
