Specifically, the quincentennial of the Maiabendfest of the city of Bochum, in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Here's one where you can read the city's name on the banner, and make out the city's neat civic arms (a leatherbound bookworm play on the name "Bochum!"):

Looking for info I found another ebay auction...for the very same coin! Sold for £2.95 to the guy I bought it from. He made 4p! I wonder if it was worth the trouble.

Could well be cupronickel. The alloy has been used in coins from about 1860.
