My mother has had this coin for years. It was from my great-great-grandfather. From what I have been told he kept them away from hands and protected. I have already had a coin person look at it and confirmed that it is a rare 1912-S. The S is somewhat obstructed by the gold necklace piece but it is a 1912-S. If anyone could offer their ideas of a grade for this coin, I took the photos with my cell phone since my camera isn't great. I did my best with these photos. I plan on seeing a PCGS dealer and possibly sending it in to be graded and preserved. Thank you.

Most likely AU55. Though a bit hard to tell with such small photos.

It looks like from the pictures that it is in a jewelry bezel; if that is the case, it will get a details grade. I cannot comment on grade (I cannot grade gold to save my life) but I think it is a wonderful piece of family history and am glad to hear you and your mother are looking at preserving it.

The 1912-S $5 Indian is a better date but not rare. Your coin looks like it has AU details and is cleaned or polished. If it is an ex-jewelry piece as you indicated, it's current market value would be about $450.

I am planning on bringing it to a PCGS dealer soon perhaps he can take off the jewelery bezel so the coin isn't obstructed, and so people can see the details better; based on his analysis I will either send it to PCGS or keep it as is if it isn't worth grading...but based on other people who have seen it they guess it is high AU to low MS, which seems to be the consensus on here too. Thanks for the responses. I have a couple of other older coins I may post pictures of including a nice low grade 1825/4 Bust Quarter I was given for free.

It looks like mid AU details. 1912-S is a better date but given the that it will probably be considered a problem coin in the marketplace, I don't see a whole lot of benefit to certification. Personally, I would treasure it as is.
