Great Minds ! And all that

When I sold off most of my remaining silver coins I could never bring myself to part with this one. Something about the unusual 'Fashionista' style of Mars being in profile and viewed from the rear.
It reminded me of an advertisement for some trendy European men's toiletries.

Bad case of "Helmet Head" ? Try Aphrodite's Styling Mousse for men ...... Mars wouldn't go to war without it !

A few good scratches in the field which normally would drive me bonkers ....... But I kept this one

Well I think some nice toning can be achieved with a bit of patience and the BIG difference between the two coins is actually in the photographs ! Now you can be a dope like me and spend $1000 on a new digital SLR (What really hurts is that the ones for $500 today are actually twice as good !) Or you can learn how to use the macro settings and light adjustment settings on a decent used digital camera (about $50 on ebay). I think the coins are actually quite similar and with some toning yours would get a higher grade (scratches !). Photography is an art and coins can be tricky subjects.

Believe it or not (I posted this once before) When I was doing my casting experiments I put a blindingly white Antiochus VII tetradrachm in a 'vulcanizer' to make a rubber mold. The vulcanizer uses sheets of latex which get baked to form the rubber (with the coin inside). Latex of course contains trace amounts of sulfur. When I removed Antiochus I was amazed by the change in appearance. The dealer who later purchased it from me (who shall remain nameless) remarked "Fantastic old cabinet toning!"

I smiled ..... "But of course"

I bought it from one dealer .... sold to it to another .....
and had an extra $25 to pay for my gas and tolls
