I'm not normally puzzled by Japanese coins but possibly I've lost the appropriate brain cells.

I can't read the date on this 5 yen, none of them seem to be any of the numbers listed in KM.

Which characters should I be looking at and what's the date, please ?

I can't see any numbers either, so I guess it's the first year of a new era.

Thank you for recommending my date converter.

The year is 1989 indeed. 平成.年 is the 1st year of Akihito's rule. Unlike 一 is 1, 二 is 2, in this date . means "the first" instead of "one".

Hope this helps :)

I've just described the above-mentioned rule in the English version (in my native language it's been there since 2010).

I failed to understand the meaning of "the . looks very like the . that the date converter shows as 1,000.", because the converter actually represents symbols for 1..9; 10; 100. I mean up there there's no "1000"-symbol, though it exists ("千" simplified version, "仟" for traditional).
