....and the other side is not?

I've got another 1881S Morgan dollar (I gotta stop buying them, but the '81S Morgans are so purty ) and I need another set of eyes to look at this one.

Here is the obverse of the coin:

And here is the reverse held at an angle. You can clearly see my thumbprint in the reflection.

I am not looking for a grade, (but if you want to chime in, that's fine) just wondering if my original question is a possibility.

Of course, I might just be seeing things...

Thanks!

This one is on my short list of coins that I'm considering having graded and slabbed.

I'm in a quandary there as I enjoy holding a raw coin in my grubby little fingers.

As evidenced by your coin, it's possible, especially since dies did not wear out at the same rate. However, third party graders will not designate it as PL or DMPL unless both side exhibit the mirror like surfaces.

Thanks for the reply! Yep, I kinda figured that but wanted more input.

The odd thing with this coin is that the obverse has a mirror like surface on the right hand side of the coin. The left hand side is frosty luster.

Maybe it's a new designation? 3/4-DMPL!

As I understand it in spite of the gorgeous reverse on that coin it will NEVER get into a DMPL or even a PL slab.
For those labels BOTH sides must have that attribution.

The obverse die looks rather poorly prepared, a very rare occurrence at the San Francisco Mint in that era.

I think it is possible for one side to qualify for DMPL and the other side not even make PL. One of the dies could have been deemed no longer serviceable and replaced with new, freshly polished die. Unless both sides are at least PL or DMPL, none of the services will label it as such though NGC will give out a star to coins which one side is at least PL or DMPL.
