I was bored, so I drew up a $5 coin concept!
Foonie

I tried to think of something for the edge, but couldn't - maybe "A MARI USQUE AD MARE" with 13 maple leaves (for each province and territory)? Plus, if Quebec leaves, they'll have to take out a maple leaf, which means varieties for that year (everyone loves varieties!).

Anyway, it has 5 sides for 5 dollars (there's probably a good reason why I can't think of any pentagonal coins in use anywhere, but $5 per coin means that production costs can be pretty high), and 5 corners means a good place to put 5 security designs. The design is a maple tree so we can keep the maple leaf on our coins in its full glory (and because if one cent has two maple leaves, $5 should have a thousand).

Would this be a nightmare for current Canadian vending machines, parking meters and anywhere else that takes coin payments?

Yeah... there's no way anything like that would make it to production for circulation, at least in the near future. But..... nobody said anything against it as NCLT

I like the nick-name the Foonie

Better protect the design maybe the US may like to get hold of that shape.

To fit in a slot machine, the sides would have to be curved, just like the British 50 pence coin.

The radius of the curvature would have be about the apex point on the opposite corner.

This approach to flan design is only valid for coins that have an odd number of sides.

I notice a leaf falling from the tree.
I do NOT notice however, the word 'BLORK!'* uttered by either by the tree, or the leaf.

* BLORK - Parker & Hart, (BC cartoon, circa 1990)

It'd be cool to see some Pentagon dollars.
I would've called it a Finnie, not a Foonie.

Sorry, but the only "foonie" I like, is the one that the RCM proposed, which was a golden ring around a silver center (it could also be nicknamed a "five golden rings" because it would have a golden ring, and would be worth $5, and why not put a little Christmas into the "jingle jangle of a coin. (-;) Opposite of the toonie which is a silver ring around a golden center.
