If you had enough money to buy a gold Buffalo proof or an American Platinum Eagle, which would you buy? and why?

On the Mint's website their prices are comparable and so is their percentage of fineness.

So it comes down to personal preference.

I would have picked the reverse proof gold buffalo for a coin I was looking at that could appreciate in value.

Between the two choices though I would pick the platinum eagle. I just flat out think they have better designs and they change every year. I love the platinum eagle series and one day will take a run at completing it

In 1995, I had the chance to buy a one ounce Au or Pt bullion coin. At the time, Au was $480, Pt $495.
I chose a one ounce Pt koala. I still have it.

Now, the % price difference / ounce is much the same, but historically Pt price / ounce is usually much higher.

If I were to buy another Au or Pt bullion coin?
I would choose Pt again.

A look at the historical prices of Au and Pt over the last 20 years or so may be of interest to you. That was the criterion which I used in making my original choice in 1995.

The premium for coins smaller than one ounce discourages me from making a purchase of less than one ounce.

I have spent more than the value of one ounce in either Pt or Au bullion on numismatic ancient items instead. That is where my interest normally lies.

Personal preference, indeed.

For me gold will always be better choice. It's a beautiful looking metal and gold coins are always nice to look at, even a total novice would see that. Platinum, whilst very valuable, is ultimately just another white metal. A platinum coin looks like a silver coin to most people.

Would pick gold.

Just more popular and easier to sell if needed.

Actually, Pt coins look like cupronickel coins to me!
The most obvious difference is that they have the same density as gold.

The Pt coin would have to be wildly cool to look at. Gold for me.

Gold, I think our current fiat monetary system is on very shaky ground and platinum is not a monetary metal.
