Are colorized ASE's like this one for example:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Colorized-1...em1c3688f1be are a gimmick or are they actually worth more than a regular ASE?

It seems most of them I have seen are from 1999-2001.

Marketing gimmick basically, to offer a greater variety of mint products, and to add profit to those coins that have been pad printed by the mint.

The can look quite attractive, but have no increased numismatic significance. A little bit extra for bullion stashers, who like the artwork also. No increase in bullion value.

Coins with crap on them.

Paint, bits of plastic, holograms, etc... Not only do they look awful, but they make terrible investments.

Avoid.

Painted ASE's are viewed and treated as generic secondary market silver by decent LCS's and show vendors. They're considered to be devalued by the paint
job and can be bought for $2 over spot. When I see those things for $10 over spot, I see a MAJOR warning sign about the vendor that tells me "Stay away!"
Paying $10 over spot for damaged goods is for those who are unaware of the resale value situation.

You did well to bring your question here before you took the plunge and wasted your money. You're right about the dates, too---a lot of them are 1999-2001.

If you can find them for $2 over spot... acetone works wonders in making the paint job disappear and leaving you with perfectly good ASEs.
